AirPods 5 Teardown: Batteries Removable, Case Still Tough

AirPods 5 Teardown: Batteries Removable, Case Still Tough

Repair site iFixit today took apart Apple's AirPods 5 for one of its traditional teardown videos. It turns out the new AirPods are slightly more repairable than prior models, but it's still not a simple home fix. The ‌AirPods 5‌ use pronged batteries that Apple previously used in the AirPods 3, but not the AirPods 4. The battery can be removed with a "nifty pair of tongs," and iFixit says the component is "intuitive to unplug." When the AirPods 3 used the pronged battery, there was no easy way to get into the earbud, but the ‌AirPods 5‌ are easier to pry open. iFixit was able get into the ‌AirPods 5‌ with a hair dryer to heat the adhesive and a clamp to hold the earbud in place. The left and right earbuds use different batteries with reversed polarity, so the battery from a left AirPod can't be swapped into a right AirPod, and vice versa. While the earbuds have a better repair score, iFixit said the case is "still a disaster" and difficult to get into without destroying it. iFixit gave the ‌AirPods 5‌ a repairability score of 2/10, up from the 0/10 score all previous versions have earned. The site says "skilled technicians and even intrepid DIYers" should be able to replace the AirPods batteries "with a decent success rate." Apple Releases New AirPods Beta Firmware

Apple Releases New AirPods Beta Firmware

Apple today released new beta firmware for the AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3 , AirPods 4, AirPods 5 , and AirPods Max 2 . The firmware has a build number of 9B5042a and is rolling out for developers and public beta testers. There's no word on what's included in the firmware update because Apple doesn't offer notes for AirPods beta releases. When the AirPods are connected to an iPhone, iPad , or Mac running iOS 26 , iPadOS 26 , or macOS 26 or later, there is a beta firmware option that can be accessed in the AirPods settings interface. Toggling on beta updates allows users to install the beta firmware. Firmware updates can then be downloaded by connecting the AirPods to an Apple device and connecting them to power. It can take a few hours for new firmware to be installed because there is no software update option like there is for other Apple devices. AirPods 5 vs. AirPods Pro 3 Buyer's Guide: Which Should You Buy?

AirPods 5 vs. AirPods Pro 3 Buyer's Guide: Which Should You Buy?

Apple's AirPods 5 bring Active Noise Cancellation to its $129 earbuds for the first time. The $149 AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case add longer battery life, volume controls on the stems, and a case speaker for Find My . The AirPods Pro 3 cost $249. The ‌AirPods 5‌ arrived in September 2026, a year after the AirPods Pro 3 . They continue to narrow the feature gap between the devices, but the Pro model still offers a sealed in-ear fit, substantially better noise cancellation, and hearing and workout features. Our guide helps to answer the question of how to decide which of these sets of AirPods is best for you. ‌AirPods 5‌ (2026) ‌AirPods 5‌ with Wireless Charging Case (2026) ‌AirPods Pro 3‌ (2025) Open-ear fit without ear tips Open-ear fit without ear tips In-ear fit with foam-infused silicone ear tips in five sizes Optical in-ear sensor Optical in-ear sensor Skin-detect sensor Open-ear Active Noise Cancellation Open-ear Active Noise Cancellation In-ear Active Noise Cancellation; up to 3x more effective than ‌AirPods 5‌ Force sensor controls Force sensor controls with volume swipe Touch controls with volume swipe Hearing Test, Hearing Aid, Hearing Protection, Automatic Conversation Boost, and Loud Sound Reduction Heart rate sensing during workouts Up to 4 hours of listening time on one charge with ANC Up to 5 hours of listening time on one charge with ANC Up to 8 hours of listening time on one charge with ANC Up to 20 hours of listening time with ANC using the case Up to 22 hours of listening time with ANC using the case Up to 24 hours of listening time with ANC using the case Case charges via USB-C Case charges via USB-C, Apple Watch charger, or Qi charger Case charges via USB-C, Apple Watch charger, Qi charger, or MagSafe charger Speaker in case for ‌Find My‌ Speaker in case for ‌Find My‌ Second-generation Ultra Wideband chip in case for Precision Finding with a compatible iPhone Charging case is 1.97 inches (50.1 mm) wide Charging case is 1.97 inches (50.1 mm) wide Charging case is 2.45 inches (62.2 mm) wide and has a lanyard loop Starts at $129 Starts at $149 Starts at $249 The ‌AirPods 5‌ with Wireless Charging Case are the best choice for most buyers. For $20 more than the base model, you get an extra hour of listening time per charge with ANC, volume swipes on the stems, wireless charging, and a speaker that makes a misplaced case easier to find. Choose the $129 model if the lowest price matters most and you are content with its shorter battery life and USB-C-only charging case. However, the ‌AirPods Pro 3‌ are worth the extra $100 over the higher-end ‌AirPods 5‌ if noise cancellation is your priority and you prefer a snug in-ear fit. Apple says they provide up to three times as much ANC as the ‌AirPods 5‌, since the ear tips create a physical seal. Their eight-hour listening time per charge is particularly useful on long journeys. In our hands-on testing , the ‌AirPods 5‌ sounded muddier than the Pro 3, particularly in the lower midrange. The ‌AirPods Pro 3‌ are also the clear choice if you want their hearing health features or heart rate sensing during workouts without relying on an Apple Watch. Their charging case adds Precision Finding, too. If you dislike silicone ear tips, the ‌AirPods 5‌ let you keep the open-ear fit while getting nearly all of the everyday listening features shared by the Pro model. AirPods frequently receive discounts from third-party retailers, which can narrow the ‌AirPods Pro 3‌'s $100 list-price premium over the $149 ‌AirPods 5‌. Check the latest prices using our Deals roundup before buying. Apple Puts AirTag-Sized AI Pin on Hold

Apple Puts AirTag-Sized AI Pin on Hold

Apple has paused development on a camera-equipped AI wearable, reports Bloomberg . The device was described as a pin or pendant that could be attached to clothing or worn around the neck. A camera would relay information about the wearer's surroundings to Siri , like the rumored AirPods with cameras that could come as soon as 2027. The AI pin would have Visual Intelligence features, with ‌Siri‌ AI able to answer questions about where the wearer is located or what the wearer is looking at. The prototype Apple worked on was described as similar in size to an AirTag , with a thin, circular disc shape. It was made from aluminum and glass, with a physical control button on the side. Rumors suggested Apple could introduce the AI wearable as soon as 2027, but with development postponed, that seems unlikely. Apple is working on several other wearables, including a screen-free fitness band , AI smart glasses, and AirPods with cameras. First iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5 Orders Arriving to Customers

It's Friday, September 18 in Australia and New Zealand, which means customers who pre-ordered are beginning to receive their new devices. The iPhone 18 Pro , ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 , and AirPods 5 are launching today. Apple fans who ordered an iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods will soon be sharing first impressions on Instagram, Reddit, the MacRumors forums, and other social networks. If you've received one of Apple's latest devices, let us know in the comments below and feel free to share photos and first impressions. Since there are no Apple Stores in New Zealand, customers in Australia are the first that can pick up their new devices or make a purchase in an Apple Store . In-store stock in Australia will give us insight into what we can expect worldwide, but we are anticipating ample supply of most ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ and Pro Max models. If you missed pre-ordering, you can likely get a new iPhone from an Apple retail location, a carrier, or another big box retailer like Target, Walmart, or Best Buy. After Australia and New Zealand, sales and deliveries of the new iPhone 18 models and the other devices will begin in Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and finally, North America. Some Apple Stores worldwide are opening early at 8:00 a.m. local time to allow customers to pick up reserved devices and make walk-in purchases. We shared our first unboxing video of the ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ today, but we'll have the new Apple Watch models tomorrow, and an in-depth ‌iPhone 18 Pro‌ camera video next week. Top Stories: Apple Event Recap With iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch, and AirPods

Apple's long-awaited foldable iPhone Duo is here, but that wasn't all we saw at this week's event, as Apple also took the wraps off of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, and the AirPods 5. We'll have to wait a little over a month to get our hands on the foldable iPhone Duo, but the rest of the products will be out at the end of next week. And don't forget iOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, and other software updates that will be dropping on Monday! Top Stories Everything Apple Announced at This Week's Event We'll pull out the highlights below, but be sure to check out our recap video and complete index to all of our coverage of Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event that saw the introduction of several new iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods models. The event saw John Ternus taking the stage just days after officially becoming Apple CEO, making some of the bigger announcements of the day and handing off to other Apple executives to present the details. Apple Announces Foldable 'iPhone Duo' The star of Wednesday's show was a "one more thing" unveiling of the iPhone Duo , Apple's new compact foldable phone featuring a more traditional-sized screen on the outside but unfolding into a nearly iPad mini-sized screen on the inside. In addition to a refined hardware design, the iPhone Duo features numerous software refinements to deliver a user experience optimized for the new form factor. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin on October 16, with a launch to follow on October 23, and in the meantime, check out our hands-on video from the event . Apple Announces iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max Apple this week also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max , which look very similar to the iPhone 17 Pro models but have several upgrades. As was widely rumored, both devices have a smaller Dynamic Island that can show up to three Live Activities at once. The A20 Pro chip in the iPhone 18 Pro models has a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine, and thanks in part to a much larger vapor chamber cooling system, Apple says sustained performance is up to 40% faster compared to the A19 Pro chip. Other updates include new camera features such as a variable aperture on the Main camera, longer battery life, and new color options, all of which we discussed in our hands-on and early impressions video . Pre-orders for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max kicked off today , with a launch coming on September 18. Apple Announces Apple Watch Series 12 With S11 Chip, Upgraded Health Sensors and Ceramic Models The Apple Watch Series 12 was also introduced this week , featuring a new S11 chip, a similar redesigned health sensing system as on the Ultra 4, and new aluminum, titanium, and ceramic finishes. Series 12 comes in Space Gray, Black, Light Gold, and Dark Bronze aluminum finishes. The aluminum models gain Ceramic Shield, which Apple says makes their screens 60% tougher. Polished titanium models are also available in Radiant Gold and Natural, while ceramic models come in Pearl White and Night Blue. Pricing starts at $399, with pre-orders available now ahead of a September 18 launch. Apple Announces Apple Watch Ultra 4 With Two-Day Battery Life and Upgraded Health Tracking Apple this week announced the Apple Watch Ultra 4 , which features a new S11 chip, a redesigned health sensing system, and a larger battery that Apple says delivers two days of battery life. With improved power efficiency, Ultra 4 offers up to 18 hours of workout tracking with full GPS and heart rate monitoring, or 45 hours in its maximum extended workout mode, according to Apple. Pre-orders are available now ahead of a September 18 launch, with prices starting at $799. AirPods 5 Announced With Improved Noise Cancellation, Audio Quality, and More Finally, Apple introduced AirPods 5 , offering Active Noise Cancellation with its entry-level wireless earbuds at a starting price of $129. A $149 version with a Wireless Charging Case adds swipe-based volume controls on the stems and longer battery life. Apple says AirPods 5 remove up to 50% more external noise than AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. They also boast a redesigned acoustic architecture and updated Adaptive EQ which promise richer, more detailed sound, and an improved Transparency mode that makes nearby voices and sounds more natural. AirPods 5 are available to pre-order now, with availability beginning Friday, September 18.
