Sinner withdraws from Shanghai Masters as knee injury lingers

Sinner withdraws from Shanghai Masters as knee injury lingers

World number one Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from next week's Shanghai Masters as ‌he continues his recovery from a knee injury that has sidelined him since winning the Wimbledon title in July. The Italian, 25, has not played since his triumph at the All England Club, missing the North American hardcourt swing, including the US Open, and the ongoing ATP 500 event in Beijing. "Unfortunately, I won't ‌be able to play at the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year as I had hoped," ‌Sinner wrote on Instagram on Saturday. "I always ‌enjoy playing in front of the Shanghai ‌fans and I'm ‌very sorry that I won't be able to do so next week." The Masters ‌1000 event runs from October 7-18 and features a strong field led by four-times champion Novak Djokovic, along with Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Ben Shelton, Felix Auger-Aliassime and defending champion Valentin Vacherot. Sinner won the Shanghai title in 2024, defeating Djokovic in the final. Sinner's absence could boost Zverev's push to finish the season as world number one. The German, French Open and US Open champion this year, has emerged ‌as the Italian's closest challenger. Zverev can move to the top of the rankings for the first time if he wins both the China Open in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters.

Alex de Minaur recovers from match point down to beat Alexander Zverev Carlos Alcaraz launches comeback of his own to leave event level at 5-5 For much of his afternoon on court against Alexander Zverev, Alex de Minaur seemed destined to end his day with an excruciating defeat. De Minaur had rapidly found himself down a set and a break, then Zverev served for the match at 6-2, 5-4. After miraculously giving himself another lifeline, De Minaur finally faced a match point at 8-9 in the final set tie-break. No matter how grim the scoreline appeared, though, every effort he made was punctuated by roars of approval from one person in particular. There were loud screams of encouragement, pounding of chairs and stamping of feet. At one point, as doubt had crept into Zverev’s game during the second set tie-break, that unmistakable voice from the sidelines yelled out: “Check his oil! Check his oil!” Continue reading...

Jannik Sinner withdraws from the China Open because of injury

MILAN: Jannik Sinner will not be able to defend his China Open title, further delaying his return from injury as he says his knee is not quite ready yet. The top-ranked Sinner has not played since beating Alexander Zverev in the Wimbledon final. He withdrew from the U.S. Open because of a right knee injury. And on Friday the Italian officially pulled out of the China Open, which starts Wednesday in Beijing. "I am very sorry to announce that I won’t be able to play in Beijing this year,” Sinner said in a video on social media. "My knee is not there where I would like to be and I am not ready to compete yet, but I will do everything possible to be there on court as soon as I can. "I am very disappointed that I cannot defend it (the title) this year but I’m very happy to come back next year. I wish everyone a very good tournament and I see you all very soon on court again.” Sinner did not state when he could potentially be back on tour. There is a Masters 1000 event in Shanghai starting Oct. 7 and an ATP 500 tournament in Vienna, Austria, starting Oct. 26.

Alcaraz tops the bill as the Laver Cup returns to London still aiming to prove its worth

Alcaraz tops the bill as the Laver Cup returns to London still aiming to prove its worth

The Ryder Cup-style event has struggled financially since its legendary founder, Roger Federer, retired but still offers a spectacle unlike any other in tennis The sight of a tennis player marching to the bathroom between sets has become increasingly common in modern tennis but Alexander Zverev’s journey back to the locker room in Prague nine years ago remains particularly remarkable. On this occasion, Zverev happened to be sandwiched between two of the greatest male players of all time. Neither legend was happy. To his right, an incensed Roger Federer spent their walk back to the locker room brutally laying down the law: “I want a fistpump or a ‘Let’s go!’ every fucking point you win,” he said. “And every point you lose, you fucking take it like a man. Because the problem is, when you don’t have the [result] you want, it’s like: ‘Ah, I knew it. Fuck, shit.’ I don’t want … honestly!” Continue reading...

The drought abides: US men still without a major since 2003 despite Shelton’s heroics

The drought abides: US men still without a major since 2003 despite Shelton’s heroics

Alexander Zverev was simply too good for the home hope at the US Open on Sunday. Andy Roddick’s record may stand for some time to come On a Sunday afternoon set up for Ben Shelton to play national hero, the US Open final debutant suffered a four-set defeat to Alexander Zverev, a result that deflated the partisans at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The match compounded Shelton’s miserable head-to-head record against the German, who claimed a second career grand slam title without having to face final bosses Jannik Sinner or Carlos Alcaraz. The defeat also extended a long drought – the last win by an American man at a grand slam was Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open, when Shelton was still a month off his first birthday. After the final, Shelton wore a hangdog expression as he thanked his team and the capacity crowd in New York, tucking the silver runner-up tray under his arm as if shunted off to high school detention. “Disappointed with how today went,” he said in his press conference afterward. “Excited with the progress that I feel that I’ve made. But, yeah, this one stings 100%.” Continue reading...
