Also: FAA Blames Error Messages, Spirit Sells, Jet Company Took $580K, FAA Targets ExcelAire Some Cessna aircraft that typically require two pilots will no longer receive a waiver to be flown by just one, following several fatal accidents and widespread noncompliance with rules for maintaining exemptions, the FAA has said in a notice. “The FAA finds that these exemptions do not provide an equivalent level of safety to the regulations and are no longer in the public interest,” the agency said in the notice announcing the change. A research team from Purdue University is planning to visit an island group in the Pacific Ocean in October to examine a site that might contain remnants of the aircraft Amelia Earhart used to try to fly around the world in 1937. The team consists of 17 people total, including terrestrial and maritime archaeologists. Archaeological Legacy Institute and RECON Offshore are among the organizations with personnel joining Purdue researchers on the excursion. A firefighting aircraft was struck by gunfire while operating over northern Minnesota in May. Now, a federal indictment has added a new layer to the case. Daniel Christian Pettit, 48, of Portage Township, Minnesota, has been indicted on federal charges alleging that he damaged and disabled a firefighting aircraft with a firearm while it was operating in the special aircraft jurisdiction of the United States. He also faces a charge of discharging a firearm during a crime of violence. Pettit made his initial federal appearance on September 21st. Chore jackets and loose-fit trousers nod to ‘nonconformist glamour’ of Amelia Earhart and other pioneers The Max Mara catwalk at Milan fashion week had well-cut coats, sturdy block-heeled boots, crisp white shirts and capacious suede handbags. What it quite deliberately did not have was shock value. “I hope everyone watching this show can recognise something of themselves in what they see,” said Ian Griffiths, the British designer who has been at this Italian house since 1987. “I think that’s really important. Without being critical of other brands or designers, so much of fashion alienates people and makes them feel that they aren’t good enough or thin enough or young enough to wear what’s being represented.” Trousers were pleated and roomy, skirts long enough to be elegant but not long enough to trip you up. In shades of sand and chalk, grey and black, every piece was designed to work with everything else, and to blend into an existing wardrobe. The styling gestures – a popped collar here, a knotted belt there – stopped short of gimmick.
