Harry Kane says England’s World Cup exit ‘hurt more than any other’

Harry Kane says England’s World Cup exit ‘hurt more than any other’

‘It wasn’t the team that we wanted and said we’d be’ England host Spain in Nations League on Saturday Harry Kane has described England’s World Cup semi-final defeat against Argentina as his most painful tournament exit because of how the team lost sight of who they were. The captain is determined to move on as quickly as possible and is chasing a statement performance against Spain at Wembley on Saturday night in the Nations League. But he admits he is yet to get over the Argentina game and knows it is something he and his teammates must work to process. “It felt like it wasn’t us as a team,” Kane said, as he reflected on how England lost their way in the 2-1 defeat, barely touching the ball after they went ahead in the 55th minute. “It wasn’t the team that we wanted to be and said we’d be. When you maybe go against your beliefs and you lose, it feels 10 times worse than just losing in a way where … if we lose doing it our way you accept it, take it on the chin and move on. It’s tough and it will still be tough. Continue reading...

Couples ‘putting off divorce due to cost of living crisis’ in England and Wales

Lawyers say financial pressures are fuelling ONS figures that show fewer divorces after longer periods of marriage Couples are putting off divorce because of the cost of living crisis, lawyers have said, after figures showing the average length of a marriage ending in divorce in England and Wales reached a record high last year. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) released figures on Wednesday showing that the average marriage ending in divorce lasted for 13 years in 2025. This is the longest since records began in 1963 and up from a record low of 8.9 years in 1985. Continue reading...

Mark Wood was a high-speed hero who put body and soul on the line for England | Taha Hashim

Mark Wood was a high-speed hero who put body and soul on the line for England | Taha Hashim

Fast bowler won the Ashes and two World Cups but those successes were punctuated by long spells out with injury To reach for the career stats on Cricinfo is no way to go about it. This is a full-on YouTube job: boil the kettle, load up those spells at Headingley, St Lucia and the rest, and take in the whippy, absurd, mesmerising sight of perhaps the fastest English bowler there has ever been. That’s probably the best way to remember Mark Wood’s career. Tuesday’s announcement of his international retirement was coming from the moment Wood hobbled out of the Ashes last December, the series opener his only appearance. That always felt like the last act, one he rushed back for after surgery on his left knee earlier that year, and the game moves on fast. England’s seam stocks look healthy across formats, with Jofra Archer there to ramp it up when required. It’s a sore point that Archer and Wood played just two Tests together: one without supporters during the 2020 Covid-bubble summer, the other Wood’s farewell at Perth. Continue reading...

Florian Wirtz does not look like a £116m player but it is too early to write him off

Florian Wirtz does not look like a £116m player but it is too early to write him off

The 23-year-old playmaker has been disappointing for Liverpool but has he really been that bad? By Opta Analyst When Florian Wirtz signed for Liverpool in the summer of 2025, there was only one logical assumption. The Premier League champions at the time had recruited one of the hottest young talents in world football – a key player in the Bayer Leverkusen team that had won the double in 2023-24 and a star in the Germany team. An exciting and productive young attacking midfielder being added to the best team in England? How could this not work? Football has a habit of flipping the script, though. Last season was difficult for Liverpool for several reasons, and Wirtz, along with other new arrivals, struggled to make the impact expected of a £116m player. There were conversations among fans this summer about how long he and fellow nine-figure signing Alexander Isak should be given before difficult questions needed be asked. The broad consensus was until Christmas. Continue reading...

The Spin | The hundred club remains the batter’s holy grail – just ask Dan Lawrence

The Spin | The hundred club remains the batter’s holy grail – just ask Dan Lawrence

England batter’s agony on missing out at Edgbaston reminded us that however well you play, a century remains the ultimate validation “Nooooo!” There was something about Dan Lawrence’s pained groan at Edgbaston in England’s first innings of the third Test against Pakistan. For a split second it looked as if he might plunge his bat into the turf like some tormented Norse warrior. His stumps had already been flattened by his own hand, an attempt to run the ball down past point off Mohammad Imran had ended in him hacking an innocuous delivery emphatically on to them. ‘Ghost patient’ policy wrongly removing at-risk people from GP lists, doctors say

NHS England initiative to reduce cut-off period to three months ‘disproportionately affecting’ most deprived areas An NHS policy to remove “ghost patients” from GP lists is inadvertently leaving some of the poorest people in England without vital healthcare, analysis has found. Under previous NHS rules, inactive patients at risk of being removed from their GP practice were given six months to respond to outreach. But under NHS England’s accelerated list validation timeline, introduced last October, patients now have only three months to reply. Continue reading...

‘Sometimes I do cruel things – and it’s worth it’: the fabulous shameless art of the great Sophie Calle

‘Sometimes I do cruel things – and it’s worth it’: the fabulous shameless art of the great Sophie Calle

The French artist has stalked people, posed as a hotel maid to get into rooms, and filmed her mother’s last breath. Has she any regrets? Non! As a major UK show opens, she recalls her career highs I’ve read enough interviews with Sophie Calle to know that the conversation ahead could be tricky. France’s most famous conceptual artist can be a touch evasive. Which is why I’m so surprised by the woman before me, who is friendly and seemingly open, all smiles. She’s wearing big tinted glasses, and behind them I picture her eyes twinkling. Then, 10 minutes in, she tells me she is obsessed with absence. When I ask why, she says: “Why do you live in England? Why are you wearing that sweater? I am not here to do therapy with you.” She is talking to me from the same Paris apartment she has been living in for almost 50 years. Hanging from the ceiling is a disco ball, and, alongside pictures and books, there are boxes that I imagine are filled with the innermost thoughts and feelings of her subjects. Since the early 1980s, Calle has made a name for herself with art that is at once intimate and detached, morbid and playful, immersing us in the lives of others – and in her own life, too. With a camera and a notebook in hand, she has invited strangers to sleep in her bed, posed as a hotel maid to document the belongings of guests, and called everyone in a lost address book to build a peculiarly tender portrait of its owner. Now, at 72, she is about to open her first big show in the UK for nearly two decades. Continue reading...

A hidden measles signal may reveal how large the next outbreak could be

A hidden measles signal may reveal how large the next outbreak could be

Researchers used historical measles surveillance and demographic data from pre-vaccination England and Wales to reconstruct how the susceptible population changed between epidemics. Their model linked susceptibility at the start of an epidemic year with the magnitude of the following outbreak, pointing to a potential route for one-year-ahead forecasting that requires further development for modern surveillance settings.
