Inside the pouch was a bespoke Emirates keychain featuring the flags of both the UAE and Finland and a miniature A350 charm, a pack of 3D puffy Finland stickers, a beanie featuring the Helsinki coat of arms and a certificate celebrating the inaugural flight. Following the welcome ceremony, VIPs and guests toured the Airbus A350, the newest aircraft to join Emirates’ fleet, to explore the airline’s signature products across every cabin. Inside the undersea kingdom: the secret, sinister battle to control what lies beneath the waves

Inside the undersea kingdom: the secret, sinister battle to control what lies beneath the waves

Every day, trillions of dollars, oil and gas and 99% of the world’s web traffic move through undersea pipelines that bear no state’s protection. With superpowers and corporations vying for control, should we be worried about this new wild west? On Christmas Day 2024, six weeks before Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania were due to disconnect themselves from Russia’s power grid, a Finnish engineer was just about to sit down to lunch when his phone rang. He was responsible for the Finnish side of the undersea cables that keep Finland and the Baltic states supplied with electricity, and one was malfunctioning. Within a couple of hours, authorities knew that a Cook Islands-registered tanker called the Eagle S, part of the shadow fleet carrying sanctioned Russian oil, in this case to Egypt, had sailed over the cable at the moment and location at which it had stopped working. The coastguard hailed the Eagle S. Were their anchors up? Yes, they replied – though they did not seem to check – and sailed on. Three hours later the ship hit another four cables in quick succession, nearly hobbling internet provision in Finland and Estonia – and was minutes away from a major electricity cable and the Balticconnector, which supplies the two countries with gas. Finland scrambled the border guard, which pulled up alongside the tanker and demanded the crew take up its anchor. But the Eagle S was not in Finnish territorial waters: the authorities could not force the captain to comply, and they did not know who or what might come to his aid. Continue reading...

EU-funded civil protection exercise brings together 235 first responders from 6 countries in Romania

Countries: Romania, Austria, Czechia, Estonia, France, Ukraine Source: European Commission's Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations A large-scale EU civil protection exercise is bringing together 235 first responders from Austria, Czechia, Estonia, France, Romania and Ukraine, from 28 September to 2 October. Alongside academic institutions, the teams are testing their ability to work together in a complex scenario combining floods, contamination and conflict-related hazards. Known as ‘CROSSFLOOD’, the exercise is organised under the EU civil protection mechanism and takes place in Suceava County, Romania. The EU is providing almost €1 million to cover 90% of its cost. Regular EU exercises are one of the actions set out in the Preparedness Union Strategy to strengthen Europe's readiness for complex crises. CROSSFLOOD also reflects the Strategy’s all-hazards approach, preparing for situations where different risks can interact and compound one another. The political importance of preparedness was underlined again by President von der Leyen in her State of the Union address earlier this month, when she stressed that Europe needs to ‘ step up dramatically on preparedness’ . The exercise will be followed by a evaluation to draw lessons for future emergency response operations. Estonia summons Russia’s chargé d’affaires over arson attack on a robotics company - Europe live

Foreign minister says the attack on Milrem Robotics was ‘an act of sabotage ordered by the special services of the Russian Federation’ Lithuania’s foreign minister Kęstutis Budrys also offered Lithuania’s solidarity with Estonia , saying “Russia’s fingerprints are all over,” and warning that “Russia’s hostile activities do not stop at Ukraine’s border.” “ Russia’s fingerprints are all over: the Estonian authorities have confirmed that the 15 August arson attack against the Estonian defence company Milrem Robotics in Tallinn was an act of sabotage ordered by Russian security services. The perpetrators were identified and detained. The political responsibility leads to Moscow. Russia’s hostile activities do not stop at Ukraine’s borders. They target our security, our resilience, and our resolve. “Based on the information available to KAPO, the modus operandi of the Milrem attack is consistent with other acts of sabotage carried out in Europe on behalf of Russia. KAPO assesses that the attack is directly attributable to the Russian Federation. Defence industry companies, particularly those involved in drone technology, as well as organisations supporting Ukraine, have been among the targets of Russian security services since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
