IDF shifts southern Lebanon forces toward ‘forward-defense’ posture as troops prepare for winter

The Israeli military is shifting toward a deeper “forward defense” posture in southern Lebanon, rotating formations and preparing positions for winter while continuing to clear Hezbollah infrastructure. The evolving deployment comes as Hezbollah maintains that Israeli forces’ continued presence in Lebanon justifies continued “resistance.” The post IDF shifts southern Lebanon forces toward ‘forward-defense’ posture as troops prepare for winter appeared first on FDD's Long War Journal .

NGOs say Israel bombed a journalist and appeared to attack ambulances trying to aid her – explainer

Journalist Amal Khalil was killed in April in what colleagues described as a sustained attack by Israeli forces. Rescuers attempted to dig her out of the rubble of a building that had been targeted by Israeli forces, who had also prevented them from providing life-saving assistance. Beirut-based Guardian correspondent Will Christou explains how investigations by Human Rights Watch (HRW), Amnesty International and Legal Agenda show that Israel deliberately and directly attacked Khalil and her colleague Zeinab Faraj, with apparent knowledge that they were journalists. The organisations called for the attacks to be investigated as war crimes, while HRW called for states to halt arms sales to Israel and put targeted sanctions on Israeli officials responsible for ongoing crimes. Deliberately attacking journalists is a war crime. Israel has killed at least 15 journalists in Lebanon and 210 in Gaza since 2023, according to the UN human rights office . Israel said it 'regrets any harm caused to journalists', and that they were killed 'as part of a series of events' during which two Hezbollah military operatives were killed Israeli strike that killed journalist in Lebanon was war crime, say rights groups Continue reading...

Senate Probe Finds Iran Using Tether’s Stablecoin to Bypass Sanctions and Fund Proxies Like Hezbollah: Report

Iran has been leaning on Tether’s dollar-pegged USDT to dodge a U.S. sanctions dragnet and move money for the regime and proxies such as Hezbollah, according to a new Senate Democrats report. Trump faces tough choices as Iran dangles deal to reopen Hormuz before US midterms

Iran’s seven-day timetable would restart nuclear talks, but will the US be willing to deliver on terms that include reining in Israel in Lebanon? Iran’s seven-day timetable to reopen the strait of Hormuz and start talks on its nuclear programme has been pitched as a deal that could rapidly extricate Donald Trump from a political crisis but requires the US president to make difficult concessions. In the five days left before the proposed reopening of the strait, which is expected to relieve pressure on global energy markets, Trump would need to lift Iranian asset freezes, permit Iran to export its oil and, probably most difficult of all, order Benjamin Netanyahu to end Israel’s attacks on Hezbollah in Lebanon, thus achieving the “ceasefire on all fronts”. Is Hezbollah finished, or just adapting?

Generation Jihad guest host David Daoud, an FDD senior fellow focused on Lebanon and Hezbollah, talks with Lina Khatib, an associate fellow in Chatham House’s Middle East and North Africa Programme, about her July trip in southern Lebanon, why the 2006 war never put the LAF in charge of the border, and whether Beirut can take Hezbollah’s weapons now that the group is weaker and Assad is gone. How Hezbollah reframed the battle for Ali al Taher as Israel advanced

As Israeli forces pushed from the outskirts of Ali al Taher Ridge into its underground network, Hezbollah repeatedly revised what counted as a success for the group—from denying Israeli entry to portraying the loss of the position as an attritional achievement. Syria’s military is rebuilding, but foreign influence may slow security progress

Syria’s post-Assad military is rebuilding rapidly, but its structure and foreign dependencies could limit Damascus’s ability to advance US security interests. If security cooperation from Turkey and Russia comes with strings attached, it may jeopardize Syria’s potential as a future partner against the Islamic State and Hezbollah. 'Stalemate' in Lebanon: Hezbollah justifies weapons, citing Israeli occupation and ongoing attacks

'Stalemate' in Lebanon: Hezbollah justifies weapons, citing Israeli occupation and ongoing attacks

Angela Diffley is pleased to welcome Dr Filippo Dionigi, Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at the University of Bristol. According to Dr. Dionigi, the central obstacle to Hezbollah’s disarmament is not simply the military capacity of the Lebanese state, but the absence of a political settlement capable of making disarmament both legitimate and sustainable. While additional funding and weapons would strengthen the Lebanese Armed Forces, they will not resolve the fundamental political dilemma.

LAF-Hezbollah coordination and the limits of Lebanon’s disarmament effort

LAF-Hezbollah coordination and the limits of Lebanon’s disarmament effort

Israel reportedly assesses that the Lebanese military is coordinating with Hezbollah in pilot zones intended to disarm non-state groups. The broader claim is supported by years of evidence, and the record since 2024 shows what coordination has produced: negotiated access, handovers, and seizures without Hezbollah’s genuine disarmament. Israel says destroys Hezbollah tunnels as explosions triggers tremor

Israel said Thursday it demolished key tunnels built by the Iran-backed Hezbollah group beneath the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, with the force of the explosions enough to trigger a 4.1 magnitude tremor. It comes a few days after Israeli authorities claimed to have taken control of the Ali al-Taher ridge, saying that the pro-Iranian Hezbollah had dug numerous tunnels there, allowing it to attack Israel from this mountainous area.
