Ronaldo says Portugal coach broke his word, apologises to teammates

Cristiano Ronaldo doesn't think his days playing for Portugal are over despite saying that the head coach lied to him about playing time and the superstar striker bolting from the national squad last week. Ronaldo, 41, issued a lengthy (1,700-plus words) statement to Portuguese media on Tuesday which was later shared on his ‌social media accounts. At issue are versions of events between Ronaldo and new coach Jorge Jesus, what allegedly was promised and the coach's subsequent statements at a press conference about the player. The arrangement, according to Ronaldo, was for him to play for 30 minutes against Norway in one of Portugal's four matches in the UEFA Nations League. According to Ronaldo, Jesus wanted him to play in the first match against Wales on Sept. 24, skip the matches against Norway (Sept. 27) and Denmark (Oct. 1) and play in a rematch against Norway on Oct. 4. The coach didn't think he should travel to the middle matches, but Ronaldo says he wanted to set an example as captain and be with the team even if he didn't play. Ronaldo contends that Jesus told him at lunchtime of the Sept. 27 match against Norway that the coach changed his mind and would play him for 30 minutes. The player agreed, even though it was "outside my physical recovery and training plan." But Ronaldo didn't play even after warming up. Jesus said after Portugal won the match 2-1 that it "wasn't the ‌right moment for Cris to come on," according to The Athletic, as the state of the match led him to change his mind. "The head coach had failed to keep his word," Ronaldo said in his statement on Tuesday. "At the end of the match, I just wanted everything to be over with a victory and to be ‌left alone. I did not go to greet the fans. That is a failing that is solely my ‌responsibility and should not have happened. "I apologize to the Portuguese people who supported us there, I apologize to the fans, and I apologize to ‌those who, not Portuguese, may have traveled there to see me ‌and whom I may have disappointed." Jesus said at a press conference in the week following the match that he had told Ronaldo that he wasn't playing in the middle two games, citing veteran player's struggles to play matches scheduled three days apart. Pedro ‌Proenca, president of the Portuguese Football Federation, said any dispute between Ronaldo and Jesus -- who coached him in 2025 and 2026 with the Saudi Pro League club Al Nassr -- was a "misunderstanding," he told RTP Noticias. Proenca said Ronaldo is still part of the team and available when needed. In his lengthy statement on Tuesday, Ronaldo said that he met with Jesus two days after the Norway game and the coach had promised to have a press conference and "close the matter by telling the truth." That version included that Ronaldo never asked to play any minutes, that Jesus proposed a new playing schedule and made a mistake to have him warm up but not play him. There was a "short document" drafted and validated by Ronaldo before it was sent to the coach, he wrote. Among the statements that Jesus was supposed to say at the press conference, "I made a mistake by putting someone of the stature of Pele or Diego Maradona on to warm up and then not putting him in the game. If it were today, I would not do it," according to Ronaldo's summary on Tuesday. Jesus, who was supposed to say that he wanted Ronaldo on the team "a lot," instead spoke with "aggressiveness" and a "high and mighty attitude," the player wrote. That led him to "leave the camp without waiting for any further breach of word." "Truth is still the most important thing in the relationship between people," Ronaldo wrote. "However much it hurts, let them tell me the truth." Ronaldo ‌wrote that he would accept the consequences of his actions, including punishment by the PFF, as he is the captain of the team. He apologized to teammates for leaving camp, which he said he should not have done, and apologized to the Portuguese people. Ronaldo said there will be time for one or more farewell matches, but he's thinking more about competing for his country. Portugal won all four of the Nations League games, with two more matches against Denmark and Wales in November. Ronaldo has scored a record 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal. "If I am physically fit, playing for my club, scoring goals, I hope, that after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always ‌been until today, to compete and win for our national team," Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo says he is still available for Portugal after walking out on squad

Cristiano Ronaldo is not following Lionel Messi into international retirement just yet. The Portugal superstar said he will remain available to play for his national team, despite having walked out on the squad during the current international window. In a long statement issued through the Portuguese media Tuesday, Ronaldo said recently hired coach Jorge Jesus had not been true to his word about when he would play the striker in the latest round of Nations League matches. Still, the 41-year-old Ronaldo said he owed his teammates an apology and expects to receive a punishment. "I can promise all my fans, and naturally especially all Portuguese people, that we will have one or more farewell matches. There will be time for that," Ronaldo said. He added: "Therefore, if I am physically fit, playing for my club, hopefully scoring goals, then after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team.” Ronaldo said he had agreed to a plan for managing his playing time and that he expected the coach to publicly clarify the situation and accept responsibility. He said Jesus did not follow through and instead spoke aggressively at a press conference, causing a breakdown of trust.

Ronaldo’s break with Portugal is sad, fitting, and long overdue | Jonathan Wilson

Ronaldo’s break with Portugal is sad, fitting, and long overdue | Jonathan Wilson

The star’s rift with Jorge Jesus is an unfortunate affair. But the forward has been holding his national team back for years Sign up for our free newsletter here If this is to be the end for Cristiano Ronaldo at international level, at least it can be said that he left the stage as he bestrode it: with monumental self-regard. Ronaldo has always been a preening, self-absorbed player, but for a time, when he was one of the best in the world, it could be tolerated. For the past four years, though, he has actively and obviously held Portugal back. There is a great generation of technical talent here weighed down by the monstrous albatross of his ego. To recap the basic details of the past couple of weeks. Ronaldo played 67 minutes of Portugal’s scratchy 1-0 win over Wales . Portugal coach Jorge Jesus, who replaced Roberto Martínez after the World Cup, said he had a verbal agreement with Ronaldo that he would not start the following game against Norway but would perhaps come off the bench. Early in the second half, Ronaldo went to warm up – although whether that was on his own initiative or because Jesus had told him to is unclear. The game was tight, Portugal ultimately winning 2-1, and Jesus did not bring Ronaldo on. Continue reading...

‘It’s radical to release a film called Girls Like Girls in this climate’: hitmaker turned director Hayley Kiyoko on sexuality, safety and becoming ‘Lesbian Jesus’

‘It’s radical to release a film called Girls Like Girls in this climate’: hitmaker turned director Hayley Kiyoko on sexuality, safety and becoming ‘Lesbian Jesus’

The singer’s hit 2015 single Girls Like Girls was her breakthrough moment and also the first time she felt confident in her sexuality. Now she has directed a film based on the song – a love letter to her 17-year-old self A lot of Hayley Kiyoko’s teenage summers were spent waiting, bored and pining, as she sat at the computer willing her crush to message her back on AOL instant messenger. Like Coley, the 17-year-old protagonist of Girls Like Girls, the film the pop star has co-written and directed, Kiyoko fell hard for a girl who “put me through my own heartbreak and haunted me for a long time”, she says. Although the 35-year-old singer became known by fans as “lesbian Jesus” following the release of her breakthrough single Girls Like Girls in 2015 (the film is an extended version of the story first told in the song’s music video), feeling comfortable in her sexuality didn’t actually come until after its release. Her gay identity was, at the time, the topic she was “the most scared of writing about”, and the song’s confident refrain “Girls like girls like boys do, nothing new” came from wanting to “manifest feeling confident”. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal walkout divides a nation as Jorge Jesus asserts control

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal walkout divides a nation as Jorge Jesus asserts control

Row sparked by head coach’s decision to leave the 41-year-old on the bench has left a great international career at risk of ending in acrimony The drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo and the national team has naturally become the biggest story here in Portugal. It led Wednesday evening’s news broadcasts and made the front page of virtually every major newspaper. For some, Ronaldo was right to walk out on the squad days after spending half an hour warming up against Norway without being brought on in an apparent provocation by Jorge Jesus. For others, the forward’s behaviour was intolerable and his departure a matter of time, particularly once he found himself face to face with such a strong-minded head coach. Ronaldo has promised to tell his side of the story soon, and Jesus will speak on Thursday night after the Nations League match in Denmark. A confrontation between these two huge personalities had been simmering in the background. Jesus was inevitably asked in his first press conference with the team in July how his relationship with Ronaldo would work. Jesus, who coached Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, answered categorically. Football Daily | An impressive new entry for the Cristiano Ronaldo catalogue of petulance

Football Daily | An impressive new entry for the Cristiano Ronaldo catalogue of petulance

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! When Jorge Jesus replaced Roberto Martínez, the reverse-alchemist of golden generations, as head coach of the Portugal national team, it was thought his appointment could spell the end of Cristiano Ronaldo’s international career. Aged 41 and having selfishly kiboshed his nation’s otherwise excellent chances of winning several recent major tournaments, Ronaldo promptly materialised for the Nations League opener against Wales, vowing to keep holding Portugal back at least until he’d reached the magic number of 1,000 career goals for club and country. “It doesn’t matter if I play tomorrow,” he honked. Still 21 shy of his tally, Ronaldo failed to put a dent in it during his side’s narrow victory and was an unused substitute in their follow-up win against Norway. Having previously stated that he would have no objections to being “rested” by Jesus, Ronaldo flounced out of the Parken Stadium before training on the eve of Thursday’s game against Denmark, having apparently spent the previous two days sulking in a hotel gym with only some kettlebells and squat racks for company. It’s easy to criticise the Manchester City owners and senior management (albeit that’s no reason not to), but some of us are old enough to remember when they first came in, revolutionised everything and yet they were still getting flak for not respecting the history of the club. However, turning City into a winning machine for more than a decade, letting everyone think they’re a ‘superclub’ but then having it all ripped away, being told afterwards that none of it actually happened and that they would potentially be relegated would be the greatest act of ‘Cityitis’ in history. So, a doff of the cap to the owners and senior management for an act (well, 114 of them) that even surpasses Steve Lomas holding on to the ball in the corner when they desperately needed a goal to avoid relegation because of duff information” – Noble Francis. If we could extend the investigated timeline of impact caused by City’s shenanigans, may I suggest that Manchester United be stripped of their 2024 FA Cup? The reasoning being that if The Irrefutables had not been able to so expensively put together a star ensemble, they would not have been able to beat the more noble and honest clubs of English football on their way to the final, who surely would have given a better showing against a disastrous United, who finished eighth in the league. Instead, United would have faced … checks notes … Chelsea. Oh” – Yannick Woudstra. All this debate regarding what the FA will do in the case of City’s infringements is pointless. True to form it will deduct 10 points from Everton and Forest. Case closed” – Trevor Wastell. This is an extract from our daily football email … Football Daily. The best theatre to stream this month: Jack Lowden locks horns with Martin Freeman in The Fifth Step

An addict meets his sponsor in David Ireland’s two-hander, Gillian Anderson dazzles in A Streetcar Named Desire and Winsome Pinnock’s audio dramas are revelatory For an addict in the Alcoholics Anonymous programme, the fifth of the 12 steps includes confessing your wrongs to another person, such as your sponsor. That act is at the heart of David Ireland’s characteristically turbulent, darkly humorous two-hander in which Jack Lowden and Martin Freeman lock horns. Watch out for a (sort of) cameo from Willem Dafoe as Jesus. On National Theatre at Home from 1 October. Continue reading...
