Nice guys finish first as Bamber and Woakes help Warwickshire seal slow-burn title | Ali Martin

Two bowlers often described as ‘the nicest guys in cricket’ played starring roles as the Bears outlasted the County Championship competition Ethan Bamber may be an adopted Brummie but it’s fair to say he has the city’s self-effacing nature down to a tee. After sealing Warwickshire’s ninth County Championship with one final explosion of bails, and watching captain Ed Barnard lift the trophy to cheers of “You Bears” from the stands, Bamber tried to credit anyone but himself and even claimed to be an “average cricketer”. Average? Not so fast. No bowler in Division One has sent down more than Bamber’s 445.3 overs this year, nor can top the 69 wickets that he finished on after rattling Tom Scriven’s timbers to wrap up a comprehensive innings and 79-run victory over Leicestershire. The 27-year-old ploughed through all 14 games of the campaign, with his waspish brand of wobble-seam and swing consistently undermining batting line-ups in this slow-burn triumph. Warwickshire clinch County Championship title with victory over Leicestershire

Warwickshire beat Leicestershire by an innings & 79 runs Ethan Bamber’s five-wicket haul seals title for Bears It had to be Ethan Bamber with the Championship winning nugget. As Warwickshire ’s beating heart dispatched two of Tom Scriven’s stumps, the players rushed into a victory huddle, non-playing members of the squad racing to join them, or, in the case of the injured Keith Barker, hobbling. Warwickshire’s ninth title, coming from behind to nip Somerset and Nottinghamshire on the nose, was a team performance built on the back of an astonishing season for Bamber. His 69 wickets make him the leading wicket-taker in Division One, backed up by Ed Barnard (30) and Olly Hannon-Dalby (28), while Sam Hain’s 1,048 runs were the spine and Rob Yates’s astonishing catches at slip the beauty spots. Somerset are poised to finish second again – and after 136 years it still hurts

County Championship is treated like sporting Victoriana by the authorities but it’s some of the hardest cricket around and still means plenty – especially in Taunton Every English cricket season starts with an Indian spring now but they say this one will end in an Indian summer too. The forecast is warm and dry and this, at least, is one last late blessing for the County Championship. Warwickshire, 11 points clear at the top, host a dejected Leicestershire at Edgbaston. Somerset, second again, play Surrey at Taunton; Nottinghamshire, defending champions, have Yorkshire at Trent Bridge, although the chances are that if you’ve read this far into an article about the championship you already know all this. Leicestershire facing relegation over pitch penalty, and more: County Championship cricket, day three – live

All the latest updates from around the grounds Middlesex chair Sykes to resign | Email Tanya It was advantage Warwickshire at the top but perhaps the most significant action of the day came off the pitch and at the bottom, with Leicestershire all but relegated after a points deduction. The Cricket Regulator had charged Leicestershire after the Grace Road pitch was rated as poor for last month’s win against Glamorgan. The cricket discipline panel has upheld the charge, leading to the deduction of the 19 points picked up for the victory plus eight more as a penalty. A Leicestershire statement said “the club is reviewing its position and considering all available options”, but the deduction left them bottom of the table, 38 points adrift of the last safe spot. With Hampshire 225 ahead with seven wickets standing, Leicestershire’s hopes in what is now a must-win match are slim. Continue reading...

Somerset return to summit after dog stops play: county cricket, day three – as it happened

Somerset eased to a 377-run win over Leicestershire to go top of Division One while Notts were caught cold by Hampshire’s attack Lancashire’s off-on-off wicketkeeper – sent to Essex on loan – collects 50, he and Akhter frustrating Yorkshire with an unbroken eighth-wicket partnership of 60. Essex 157 for seven, still 233 behind. A wave to the Guardian’s Will Unwin who rang the five-minute bell today at Old Trafford, asked by a unwary steward who didn’t know the red rose fury within. Dhariwal and Taylor have now stretched the lead to 215, which feels enough already although conditions are looking easier. Continue reading...
