Amazon seeks to offload $8 billion of Nvidia chips to investors, FT reports

Amazon seeks to offload $8 billion of Nvidia chips to investors, FT reports

Amazon is seeking to offload about $8 ‌billion of advanced Nvidia chips to investors through a new vehicle to strengthen its balance sheet, the Financial Times reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. In recent weeks, Amazon has held talks with investors to gauge interest in the deal that would move ‌thousands of Grace Blackwell chips it is installing in US data centres into a special-purpose ‌vehicle, the report said. The cloud ‌giant will then lease the advanced ‌AI chips back from ‌the SPV, which would tap outside investors through debt issuance, the ‌FT said, adding that the company could adopt a more asset-light approach to its balance sheet by unloading the expensive semiconductors to investors. Amazon plans to offer an equity stake of up to 10% in the vehicle, the newspaper said. The chips in the proposed deal were bought or leased by Amazon. They are installed in more than a dozen US data ‌centres across five states, including Nevada and Virginia, the report said. Amazon and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Reuters for comment outside regular business hours.

Lake Mead is at its lowest level since it was filled nearly 90 years ago, Lake Powell also at a historic low It was 42C (108F) degrees as we motored across Nevada’ s Lake Mead in our rented pontoon boat. Colby Pellegrino with the Southern Nevada Water Authority wanted to show us something we shouldn’t have been able to see. She pointed toward a rock island where a large metal pipe was sticking out of the water. “That is the first intake that was built to bring municipal water into the valley in 1970,” Pellegrino said. Nearly 200 people wrongly identified on Nevada’s voter rolls as non-citizens

Nearly 200 people wrongly identified on Nevada’s voter rolls as non-citizens

State election officials said they reviewed 185 records homeland security sent them and confirmed they were US citizens The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) wrongly identified 185 people on Nevada’s voter rolls as non-citizens, state officials said this week, escalating concerns over the shoddy methodology the government is using to raise fear about non-citizen voting ahead of the midterm elections. In July, Donald Trump gave a speech saying DHS had found a combined 278,000 non-citizens on the rolls in Nevada, California, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Follow-up letters to each of those states weakened the claim, saying there only could be as many as 278,000 non-citizens on the rolls, including up to 15,903 in Nevada. Continue reading...

‘Hardships never last’: Jenn Lichter’s path from Colombian orphanage to ultrarunning records

‘Hardships never last’: Jenn Lichter’s path from Colombian orphanage to ultrarunning records

Jenn Lichter’s childhood followed a difficult path. The resilience she gained helped her achieve an unbreakable ultrarunning feat this summer On 27 June, Jenn Lichter lined up for her first 100-mile race, the Western States 100. The oldest and most prestigious 100-miler in the world, Western States attracts a highly competitive field from around the globe – the athletes run across the Sierra Nevada from Olympic Valley to Auburn, California. Despite 18,000ft of climbing and daytime temperatures often flirting with triple digits, Lichter went in confident. “I wanted to win, there was no secret to that,” she says. “That’s just who I am.” The race remained close for the first half, until the 30-year-old made a move on the climb to Devil’s Thumb. The gap grew and at the final aid station, Lichter had a sizable lead over the athlete in second place. A mile from the finish, Nick Cornell, Lichter’s fiance, told her she was just ahead of the course record. “That was the first I had heard about it,” Lichter says. “He knew my competitive side would jump at the challenge.” Continue reading...
