Pennsylvania’s AI Boom Is Repeating Old Patterns of Exploitation

Pennsylvania’s AI Boom Is Repeating Old Patterns of Exploitation

Pennsylvania’s data center industry has promised economic growth and a revival of the state’s industrial strength. But a new report issued Tuesday finds little evidence of job growth and warns that adding more of the massive computer complexes could repeat a long history of industrial facilities exploiting the communities that house them. The research group […]

Why the CDC is excluding measles deaths in Pennsylvania even as outbreak appears to be ‘accelerating’

Why the CDC is excluding measles deaths in Pennsylvania even as outbreak appears to be ‘accelerating’

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention refuses to count four measles deaths in the state though doctors are ‘seeing new forms’ of disease The US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its measles dashboard on Friday – but it’s still not counting four measles deaths in Pennsylvania, where the outbreak appears to be accelerating and cases are appearing in ways providers have never seen before. Members of Congress on Monday requested an “immediate briefing” on the decision to change how measles deaths are reported as cases continue to rise throughout the United States, reaching levels not seen in decades. A possible measles exposure was reported in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia last week. Continue reading...

Could Abandoned Mines House Pennsylvania’s Unwanted Data Centers?

Could Abandoned Mines House Pennsylvania’s Unwanted Data Centers?

Almost nobody wants a data center for a neighbor. Residents fear noise and air pollution, excessive energy and water use and the loss of open land. In Pennsylvania, a hot spot for new data centers, researchers see an opportunity to solve some of these issues by taking advantage of a much older environmental hazard: abandoned […]

Prof disclosed student’s childhood abuse in book

PHILADELPHIA — A federal court in Pennsylvania allowed a former graduate student to pursue privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress claims against a Penn State professor who published details of the student’s childhood sexual abuse without his consent. He plausibly argued the professor encouraged him to share about his abuse in confidential seminars and knew the information was highly sensitive but published it and named him in her book anyway. Related claims against the university are dismissed because it did not publish the book and its promotion of the book did not itself disclose the student’s abuse.

Shapiro fires back at RFK Jr., Trump on measles: ‘Incompetence’

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) fired back against at President Trump’s Friday Oval Office comments calling him a “bad governor” that’s “close to incompetent” following four measles-related deaths in the state. “Incompetence is letting measles, a disease that was declared eliminated in 2000, reemerge,” Shapiro wrote on social media Friday. “Incompetence is spending your time…

‘Clear retribution’: dismay as key Alzheimer’s study cancelled amid Trump attacks on science

‘Clear retribution’: dismay as key Alzheimer’s study cancelled amid Trump attacks on science

Participants in Pittsburgh may never learn the results of their cognitive tests – and funding cuts that target ‘DEI’ have the potential to delay vital diagnoses Roderick Blair was surprised when scientific researchers appeared on his doorstep in the Homewood neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Here, on a recent summer day, police cars, an ambulance and a TV reporter crowded into a driveway on the edge of the neighborhood. A helicopter swung overhead. Saplings peeked over rooflines from gutters, windows were broken, screens tattered, doors boarded up and rippling sidewalks crumbled. Bedraggled chain link fences held back the season’s tall grass. ‘People Are Still Terrified of Me’: Sharon Stone on Thriving for 46 Years in Hollywood and Why ‘My Lane Was Never Going to Be Sex Psychos’

Sharon Stone has every reason to be tough. It’s not just that her father hung the carcasses of the animals he shot on the clothesline during her childhood in rural Pennsylvania and her mother once pulled a huge nail out of Stone’s foot that had gone straight through, wrapped it up and then sent her […]

My Year in Paris With Gertrude Stein by Deborah Levy audiobook review – gripping vision of a fearless writer

My Year in Paris With Gertrude Stein by Deborah Levy audiobook review – gripping vision of a fearless writer

A fictional British author in Paris sets out to explore Stein through the lens of her own friendships, in this inventive, perfectly paced portrait It is late 2024, and an unnamed British author living in Paris is trying to write an essay on Gertrude Stein, the modernist writer and art collector. The author has been distracted by her friend Eva’s cat, who is lost and whose name is “it” in lower case, which inevitably leads to confusion – has Eva lost her cat or her mind? (Her other friend, Fanny, has rechristened the cat Bob, to make talking about him easier.) The Pennsylvania-born Stein was painted by Picasso, hung out with Hemingway and wrote strange, stream-of-consciousness prose long before James Joyce embarked on his masterwork Ulysses. Commercial success didn’t come until she was in her 60s with The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas, a biography of her partner and one of her more accessible books. Our narrator is an admirer of Stein’s work, yet she can be exasperated by it. “Sometimes, when I read her baffling and beguiling writing I want to smack it in the chops. [Stein] longed for her readers to find her, yet there was a part of her that could not bear to be found.” Continue reading...
