Classic Aero-TV: Tom Schnell's Mi-2 - Modern Work For Elder Russian Helos

From 2019 (YouTube Edition): An Historic Aircraft Solving Modern Challenges Sitting in the Warbirds area at AirVenture 2019 was a pair of Soviet-era MI-2 helicopters which are being used as testbeds for a lot of new technology at the University of Iowa. The aircraft is used to test cutting-edge avionics, enhanced vision systems, and other innovations. It is designed to allow instrumentation to be changed quickly, letting researchers make adjustments to their experiments and more quickly bring their ideas to fruition. How did that come to happen, and why the MI-2? That's an interesting story that Tom "Mach" Schnell, the operator of the aircraft, told to Aero-News Editor Tom Patton during the show.

Country diary: A young shieldbug has found a safe place to hide – or so it hopes | Nic Wilson

Country diary: A young shieldbug has found a safe place to hide – or so it hopes | Nic Wilson

Bedmond, Hertfordshire: Serge Hill Project is a haven for humans and wildlife, and there’s much to find in its collection of drought-tolerant plants Looking across a swathe of golden oat grass to the Apple House, it seems almost inconceivable that the M25 and M1 motorways are just beyond the treeline. I’m exploring the Serge Hill Project for Gardening, Creativity and Health : a therapeutic resource for local schools, community groups and charities, founded three years ago by Tom and Sue Stuart-Smith. All around me, a diverse collection of drought-tolerant plants is thriving in a six-inch layer of sharp sand in the uppermost section of the Plant Library , despite not having been watered once during our sweltering summer. Post your questions for Miranda Richardson

Post your questions for Miranda Richardson

She has lit up screens large and small playing Ruth Ellis, Rita Skeeter, Barbara Castle and the hilarious Queenie in Blackadder. Alternatively, you could ask about birds of prey, orangutans or playing the cello Judging by the size of her awards cupboard, Miranda Richardson has had quite the career. She won a Bafta for the 1992 psychological drama Damage, opposite Jeremy Irons, and Golden Globes for the 1991 historical drama Enchanted April and the 1994 Nazi thriller Fatherland, and was Oscar-nominated for both Damage and the 1994 historical drama Tom & Viv. Her other notable performances include IRA member Jude in The Crying Game, Ruth Ellis in Dance With a Stranger and Lady Van Tassel in Sleepy Hollow. She’s pretty handy at comedy, too – and probably just as familiar for playing acid-tongued Daily Prophet journalist Rita Skeeter in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the murderous chicken-farm owner Mrs Tweedy in Chicken Run and, of course, the gloriously unhinged Queenie in Blackadder II: “I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman, but I have the heart and stomach of a concrete elephant.” Continue reading...

Great to see what Tom Cruise’s belly button looks like, but it’s the stuff he is never asked about that interests me | Marina Hyde

Most stars, and especially women, are endlessly expected to explain the past: the lessons learned and all the regrets. But not Tom – it’s Hollywood’s free pass There really is no press tour like a Tom Cruise press tour – which is why there have not really been any Tom Cruise press tours for a very long time indeed. We’re now at the stage of this one where even the interviewers have been forced on to the interview circuit to defend their interviews. Anyway: Cruise. The guy has one child with ex-wife Katie Holmes who dropped his surname as soon as she was legally allowed, and two Scientologist children widely reported to be effectively estranged from their mother, Nicole Kidman . The divorces from Kidman and Holmes were clearly deeply strange and traumatic events for both women, and have remained shrouded in unusually watertight and presumably contractual secrecy. Yet you can currently find Tom Cruise promoting his latest movie not being asked about any of this stuff, or indeed any of his other extensive “stuff” – as always – but instead doing things like giving Travis and Jason Kelce’s podcast a lecture on the benefits of VistaVision. Hate to say it, but a woman could never. Marina Hyde is a Guardian columnist. Her new book is What a Time to Be Alive! To support the Guardian, order your signed copy at guardianbookshop.com . Golden Boy review – Great Depression boxing melodrama swings between hope and despair

Golden Boy review – Great Depression boxing melodrama swings between hope and despair

Almeida theatre, London Josh O’Connor makes a powerful return to the stage as a New York violinist driven by dire straits to risk everything in the ring Clifford Odets proved himself a contender during the Great Depression but has grown unfamiliar on this side of the Atlantic. Here is a rare outing for his 1937 drama, bolstered by the stage return of Josh O’Connor after a decade on screen. He plays Joe Bonaparte, a New York violinist who, after years of careful endeavour, dismisses a precarious career in music to turn a quick buck as a boxer – risking his precious hands in the process. He is spurred on by a zealous manager, Tom, who even deploys his own lover, Lorna, to keep him satisfied. O’Connor transforms seamlessly as Bonaparte who hardens, bout by bout, with a resolve he deems fitting for the desperate 30s. His professional success and emotional spiral are observed by an anxious father, who irresistibly hymns music over money, and the ruthless gangster who has bought a stake in him. Continue reading...

Switzy by Emma Cline review – this Booker-listed account of a man’s last days is profoundly moving

Switzy by Emma Cline review – this Booker-listed account of a man’s last days is profoundly moving

Struggling with Alzheimer’s, the central character sets out on his final journey to a euthanasia clinic The word “Alzheimer’s” never appears in Switzy, Emma Cline’s third novel, which arrives pre-endorsed as a Booker prize longlistee. But we can be certain that it is the disease afflicting its central character, David Hastings – certain in a way he finds it increasingly hard to be about anything. When the novel begins, David and his assistant Cody are aboard a private jet flying from his home in the US to the UK. Landing at London City airport (which the book, experiencing its own senior moment, situates in the countryside), they visit David’s daughter and her family before travelling on to Zurich (hence “Switzy”). One more appointment, a catchup with an old boarding school roommate called Tom, awaits just over the French border, after which David will be euthanised at a facility resembling Dignitas.
