Jeffrey Archer, bestselling UK novelist and scandal-plagued politician, dies aged 86

Jeffrey Archer, bestselling UK novelist and scandal-plagued politician, dies aged 86

London: Jeffrey Archer, the bestselling British novelist and former politician who was jailed for lying in a high-profile libel case, has died aged 86, his publisher HarperCollins said on Monday. Archer sold over 300 million copies worldwide and was known for pacy thrillers like his 1976 debut "Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less" and 1979's "Kane & Abel". His final novel, "Adam and Eve", is due to be published on Tuesday. Kate Elton, HarperCollins' UK CEO and Archer's editor, said in a statement: "We're all devastated to have lost a writer who has brought joy to generations of readers - and a true ‌friend." Archer was also a prominent Conservative politician, who briefly served as a lawmaker before becoming a senior party official under then-Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the mid-1980s. But he was as well-known ‌for his very public downfall. In 1987, Archer sued the Daily ‌Star tabloid, winning a ‌then-record £500,000 ($660,450) in damages. The case returned ‌to the public eye when he was selected as the Conservative candidate to become London's first elected mayor in 1999. A former friend ‌accused him of lying and Archer was eventually charged with perjury and perverting the course of justice, convicted and sentenced to four years' imprisonment. He served two years, during which time he wrote "A Prison Diary". Archer trial notorious for judge's summing up The trial of Archer's libel case, which was heard in front of a jury, became notorious for the judge's summing up of evidence given by Archer's wife Mary. Archer's reputation as one of the most colourful figures in British public life did ‌no harm to his literary career. His books were sold in 119 countries, HarperCollins said. He spent a total of five-and-a-half years on the New York Times bestseller lists. He was due to speak about his final novel this weekend at the Cheltenham Literature Festival and had recently appeared on radio shows to promote the book. HarperCollins said he had died suddenly and peacefully, "between writing sessions".

East of Eden review – Florence Pugh’s soapy Steinbeck adaptation is brilliant, compelling TV

East of Eden review – Florence Pugh’s soapy Steinbeck adaptation is brilliant, compelling TV

This take on the 1952 novel is lavishly shot and full of excellent performances. It lacks the heft to be a full examination of human nature, but it’s a high-quality family saga It is rarely difficult to distinguish between a John Steinbeck novel and a ray of sunshine. The new adaptation of his 1952 book East of Eden doesn’t buck the trend and wastes no time plunging us into the murk. The opening scene follows a beaten, bloodied woman as she crawls across a muddy field towards the only house for miles around. Out of the house come two brothers. One rushes to rescue her. The other takes one look and announces: “This is a mistake.” Brother, you have no idea. The rescuer is Adam Trask (Christopher Abbott), the sceptic Charles (Mike Faist). Cut back 25 years to watch them being raised in misery in an essentially motherless household by their monstrous father, Cyrus (Tracy Letts), a civil war veteran and ceaseless recounter of his heroics therein. Charles longs to follow in his footsteps. Adam is beaten for his lack of aggressive instinct. But it is Adam whom Cyrus sends to enlist and Charles he forces to stay behind and work on the family farm. “Because,” he says to Adam in a rare instance of paternal wisdom, “there are loose things in him that should be reined down.” Continue reading...

Next Generation 2021: why slow and steady sometimes wins the race

Next Generation 2021: why slow and steady sometimes wins the race

A look at how our picks from five years ago have got on shows that breaking through early does not guarantee longevity or future success Read the full updates on our class of 2021 here and here In 2021, as every year, we picked 80 players from around the world who had a chance of making it in world football – 20 from the Premier League and 60 from the rest of the world – as part of our Next Generation series . We then follow these talented boys on their journeys for five years. Often it is almost impossible to predict how they will get on (OK, when Sid Lowe sent over Lamine Yamal in 2024 we had an inkling he might do well). The ball-playing central midfielder comes from a footballing family and academy staff believe his tactical awareness is born from growing up around the game. His father, Adam, played for Brighton and is now manager along the coast at Worthing FC, while Martin (his great uncle), Paul (his grandad), and Wally (his great grandad), all enjoyed careers as players. The youngest to play in the Bundesliga at 16 years and one day, youngest player to appear in the Champions League 17 days later, youngest goal scorer in Bundesliga 11 days after that and youngest player and youngest goal scorer for the Germany Under-21 team before he has turned 17. ZCASH on an Adam and Eve pattern to 50k!

ZCASH on an Adam and Eve pattern to 50k!

Zcash (ZECUSD) broke this month above its January 2018 High. It has done so on a standard Adam and Eve (A&E) pattern, while using its 1W MA50 (blue trend-line) as Support for the past year (since September 2025). The technical Target on such patterns is the 2.0 Fibonacci extension, which sits at $50000. That would make a new historic High above the All Time High of $30k made on ZEC's first ever trading week. --- ** Please LIKE 👍, FOLLOW ✅, SHARE 🙌 and COMMENT ✍ if you enjoy this idea! The pet I’ll never forget: Polly, the golden retriever who saved my husband’s life

The pet I’ll never forget: Polly, the golden retriever who saved my husband’s life

We got her as a puppy and she became particularly close to Adam – a blessing when he went into cardiac arrest in the middle of the night My husband, Adam, and I had always planned to have a big family and that journey began when we got our dog, Polly, five years ago. I’ve loved golden retrievers since I was a child because I grew up with one. We got Polly as a puppy and she was everything we’d hoped for: loving and smart. She immediately connected with both of us, but became inseparable from Adam. They would go for morning runs together; Polly could always be found wagging her tail by his side. This bond proved to be lifesaving. Continue reading...
