WSL talking points: heat cranks up on Arsenal, but Putellas and Diani shine

WSL talking points: heat cranks up on Arsenal, but Putellas and Diani shine

Pressure continues to build on the Gunners’ head coach, while powerful London City Lionesses demolished Spurs Travelling Arsenal fans showed no animosity towards the head coach, Renée Slegers, despite their side’s run of one win in six games all competitions, and the north Londoners slipping 10 points behind Manchester City. Slegers walked over to applaud the 2,000 away fans after the 4-2 defeat at Etihad Stadium , and they applauded her back. Slegers said: “I mostly went there to thank them, and connect with them, and show them that I care for them and appreciate them coming to Manchester. And also showing to show them that I feel – not sorry for them because I’m, of course, a big part of it and things are within my control – but they’re coming here and they’re not getting the rewards, just like the team. So I just wanted to connect with them instead of walking away and hiding.” Tom Garry Match report: Manchester City 4-2 Arsenal Match report: Manchester United 1-0 Liverpool Continue reading...

WSL talking points: Chelsea punish Arsenal and Putellas finds her rhythm

WSL talking points: Chelsea punish Arsenal and Putellas finds her rhythm

The Gunners lacked cutting edge at Stamford Bridge while the former Barcelona star dominated against Brighton How to solve the problem of an inability to take your chances? That is the question that will haunt the Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers over the coming days. In their 1-0 defeat by Chelsea, Arsenal applied more than enough pressure to make a difference but in registering only two of their 18 shots on target, a fundamental lack of ruthlessness remains. They dominated the opening stages at Stamford Bridge but, as has often been the case this season, they were made to pay for their wastefulness. None of their nine first-half attempts troubled the Blues goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Chelsea, however, had five of eight on target and scored just before half-time through Alyssa Thompson. “I wanted to keep it away from the players because they can score goals and they can finish and they will get the rewards for their work,” Slegers said. With their season unravelling, however, solutions need to be found quickly. Sophie Downey WSL roundup: Putellas scores first London City goal, Man City maintain perfect start Continue reading...

Chelsea v Arsenal: Women’s Super League – live

WSL rivals meet at Stamford Bridge; 4.30pm BST kick-off Live scores | Putellas on target for Lionesses | Email Will Two unbeaten teams with grand ambitions arrive at Stamford Bridge after underwhelming 1-0 wins in Europe in midweek. The pair are yet to lose this season but it does not feel like either side has hit their straps. A clash against a supposed title rival could be the inspiration required to kick on. If one does secures a victory today, it should be the requisite boost for the winners and blow to the losers. Chelsea are in the slight better form with two wins from three, while Arsenal have drawn twice, scoring only two times in three league games, and were lucky to come away from the fixture against Manchester United with a point. Women’s Champions League: will OL Lyonnes or English trio topple a weakened Barcelona?

The league phase kicks off this week, with several sides optimistic of unseating the European champions This competition is wide open. “But, wait, you say that every year!” No, honestly, this time it is wide open. The league phase of a new Women’s Champions League campaign begins on Tuesday with genuine elements of unpredictability, intrigue and a competitive feel after Barcelona, the holders, and winners of four titles in six years, underwent significant changes this summer. The Spanish champions, who have reached six European finals in a row, have had four players who started the victory in the final last season leave the club . Ona Batlle joined Arsenal , Salma Paralluelo signed for OL Lyonnes – against whom she scored twice in that 4-0 victory to clinch the title in May – and Alexia Putellas and Mapi León moved to London City Lionesses. They have a very different look and feel to the formidable aura they demonstrated in Oslo. Continue reading...
