Daley Thompson: ‘I was happy to sleep on floors to do what I was doing. You know you have to earn it’

Daley Thompson: ‘I was happy to sleep on floors to do what I was doing. You know you have to earn it’

The double Olympic champion insists a knighthood wouldn’t change his life, still trains on Christmas Day and explains why he got a video game and Seb Coe didn’t “When you’re a kid, you think you can be Superman,” says Daley Thompson, as he gazes back to the era when he was track and field’s ultimate man of steel. “As you grow up, life kind of knocks those edges off you. But that never happened to me. I’ve always gone where I was aiming. I’ve been the luckiest bloke in the world.” Luckiest? Hardly. During the 1980s, Thompson powered to two Olympic decathlon gold medals, broke the world record four times and remained unbeaten for nine extraordinary years. Along the way, self-doubt, like his opponents, was conquered and vanquished. That wasn’t luck, it was talent and unyielding willpower. Continue reading...

WSL talking points: Chelsea punish Arsenal and Putellas finds her rhythm

WSL talking points: Chelsea punish Arsenal and Putellas finds her rhythm

The Gunners lacked cutting edge at Stamford Bridge while the former Barcelona star dominated against Brighton How to solve the problem of an inability to take your chances? That is the question that will haunt the Arsenal head coach Renée Slegers over the coming days. In their 1-0 defeat by Chelsea, Arsenal applied more than enough pressure to make a difference but in registering only two of their 18 shots on target, a fundamental lack of ruthlessness remains. They dominated the opening stages at Stamford Bridge but, as has often been the case this season, they were made to pay for their wastefulness. None of their nine first-half attempts troubled the Blues goalkeeper Hannah Hampton. Chelsea, however, had five of eight on target and scored just before half-time through Alyssa Thompson. “I wanted to keep it away from the players because they can score goals and they can finish and they will get the rewards for their work,” Slegers said. With their season unravelling, however, solutions need to be found quickly. Sophie Downey WSL roundup: Putellas scores first London City goal, Man City maintain perfect start Continue reading...

Chelsea turn up heat on Arsenal as Alyssa Thompson strike settles WSL derby

Arsenal’s title chances were dealt a significant blow after a narrow defeat at the hands of Chelsea . Alyssa Thompson’s first-half finish was the difference on a competitive afternoon at Stamford Bridge but one that ultimately left Renée Slegers with more questions than answers about how to save their season. “Worried? No,” Slegers said. “Confidence is something that fluctuates. They know who they are and they know what they can bring. What’s important is that there’s always phases in the season and there’s different things you need to work on or focus on. Continue reading...

Grizzly reality: US states grapple with uptick in encounters between bears and humans

Taryn Simon on her most ambitious exhibition yet: ‘It’s built almost like a novel’

Taryn Simon on her most ambitious exhibition yet: ‘It’s built almost like a novel’

The multidisciplinary artist delves into pockets of history, including within her family, for the largest ever debut of new work staged at the Guggenheim Taryn Simon is seated in a conference room at the Guggenheim, looking dazed. Her new show, Father Country I Do Love You, opens in under three weeks. It’s a big deal, the first monographic exhibition by a photography-based artist in the iconic spiral rotunda, and the largest debut of new work ever staged at the museum. There’s still a lot of work to be done. Downstairs, the lobby is being transformed into the Bangkok living room of Jim Thompson, a silk businessman-slash-spy who disappeared in 1967. Simon’s father, a US government worker, was living in Thailand at the time and figured that the Chinese got him, if not a tiger. When Simon was nine, the father and daughter recreated Thompson’s famous wood-panelled den back in Long Island. “And then I built it here with fake teak,” she says, voice wilting. “It’s driving me nuts. I’ve spent so much time trying to make non-teak look like teak.” Continue reading...
