Iran says it ‘has no plans to negotiate with US’ despite Trump claims – US politics live

Trump had told Axios he expected talks to resume a day after he rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the strait of Hormuz With speculation about whether he may defect from the Democratic party swirling around him, US senator John Fetterman described himself seemingly unintentionally as a “lifelong Republican” during a fireside chat in Texas over the weekend. Fetterman made the comment when someone listening to him speak with CBS News political correspondent Major Garrett at the Texas Tribune Festival on Saturday asked the Pennsylvania senator why he had not become an independent. The Trump administration on Monday plans to release new fuel economy standards that would relax regulatory requirements for automakers to control pollution from gasoline-powered cars and light trucks. President Donald Trump said on his Truth Social media account on Saturday that the less stringent mileage requirements would “take the waste out of building cars in America” and save families “thousands on a new, beautiful and safe car,” while boosting auto production in the US. Donald Trump ’s attorney general Todd Blanche argued on Sunday that the administration was permitted to ban three news outlets from the White House because “it is a privilege and not a right to be there”. Appearing on the ABC News program This Week during the second week of the White House’s dispute over press credentialing and access, Blanche also said that the administration took the decision to ban CNN, MS Now and Politico beginning on 19 September because the president was “sick and tired” of what he considered to be those media outlets’ inaccurate reporting. US senator Thom Tillis on Sunday criticized Donald Trump , his fellow Republican, for the president’s support of Ken Paxton over incumbent John Cornyn in the Texas Senate Republican primary. “He made a colossal mistake,” Tillis, a frequent Trump critic from North Carolina, said during an interview on CNN’s State of the Union in reference to the president’s support of Paxton who defeated Cornyn in the May primary. The United States and China released Monday reciprocal lists of products worth about $30bn each that will see tariff cuts, in a deal expected to boost bilateral trade. The details came days after Chinese President Xi Jinping met with president Donald Trump in Washington in his first state visit to the US since 2015. Trump justified the pending US arms sale to Taiwan to Chinese president Xi Jinping by downplaying it as just one of many sales Washington makes around the world - even asking Xi if he’d be in the market for US arms, Trump’s ambassador to China said on Sunday. House Democrats are preparing a vast oversight agenda, with investigations of Trump, his family and his administration if the party sweeps control of the chamber from Republicans in the November elections. The undertaking is as robust as it is daunting, spanning several House committees. Continue reading...

Trump confirms meeting with Anthropic chief, reiterates opposition to slowing AI development

Trump confirms meeting with Anthropic chief, reiterates opposition to slowing AI development

Washington/Chicago: US President Donald Trump confirmed that he plans to meet Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei for dinner on Sunday, while reiterating his opposition to slowing the pace of artificial intelligence development. Trump said he remains concerned that additional regulation could undermine the United States' competitive advantage in AI and allow China to gain ground. "We're about maybe a year and a half up on China," Trump told Fox News while attending the Presidents Cup golf tournament in Illinois. "We're leading, and we're building tremendous, trillions of dollars' worth of places. And why should we give that up?" The comments confirmed earlier reports by Axios and Reuters that Trump was scheduled to meet Amodei on Sunday evening. The meeting comes amid growing calls from technology leaders for greater oversight of increasingly advanced AI systems. Companies and executives associated with Anthropic's rivals, including OpenAI, Google's DeepMind, Microsoft and xAI, have advocated measures aimed at slowing or regulating AI development. Support for federal intervention has increased since OpenAI disclosed in July that an autonomous AI agent hacked another company's systems during a security test. Trump, however, dismissed concerns over such incidents. "I don't worry about it," he said, adding that he remains confident in the technology and its potential. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates also called for greater oversight of artificial intelligence during an interview broadcast on NBC's Meet the Press. "I hope that, given my life's work in the field, my saying how unique and different this is and how concerned I am will add to what he's hearing from other people," Gates said. He added: "You need law enforcement and the politicians to get into the discussion about what safeguards and monitoring look like. And that has to be a required thing." Warnings about the risks posed by advanced AI have intensified in recent weeks following assessments by researchers at leading AI laboratories. Former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon has warned that AI could pose an existential threat within the next decade, while Anthropic alignment science lead Evan Hubinger said there was a greater than 10 per cent chance of such an outcome during the same period. When asked about such concerns, Gates said AI was "certainly powerful enough to drive events that can cause a billion deaths." Trump has previously dismissed warnings about AI risks, describing such concerns as a "hoax", while Gates argued that safeguards would not significantly impede innovation and that the risks of inaction are real. "It's not a hoax at all," Gates said.
