Canada’s Oil Patch On Track For Biggest M&A Wave In A Decade

Nearly a decade ago, the Canadian Oil Patch recorded a major asset sale and consolidation wave as oil majors exited the oil sands in favor of higher margins in U.S. shale oil as well as environmental concerns amid the ESG investing craze. To wit, Shell Plc (NYSE:SHEL) sold the majority of its oil sands interests to Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (NYSE:CNQ) in 2017 a transaction valued at roughly $11.1 billion CAD ($8.5 billion USD), while Cenovus Energy (NYSE:CVE) acquired most of ConocoPhillips'(NYSE:COP) Canadian assets for C$17.7 billion (approximately…

Two new reports show that Canada needs to do much more to tackle climate change

Global warming is expected to cross the 1.5°C temperature threshold—the lower limit of the Paris Agreement temperature goal—within a handful of years. This temperature increase shows no signs of slowing, and on our current trajectory, Canada is likely to experience temperatures 5°C above preindustrial levels by the end of the century.

Hormuz Supply Crisis to Change LNG Market Forever

Hormuz Supply Crisis to Change LNG Market Forever

The Strait of Hormuz crisis has turned roughly 20% of global LNG supply into something buyers now have to treat as interruptible. Nearly seven months after traffic through the strait collapsed, LNG exports from Qatar and the UAE remain severely constrained. Buyers in Europe and Asia are responding by looking for supply that does not depend on Hormuz at all—from Canada, Mozambique, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Argentina—and reconsidering how much of their future gas demand they are willing to tie to a single export route. The war…

Canada: Press Vietnam’s Leader on Rights

(Ottawa) – The Canadian government should raise the Vietnamese government’s poor human rights record during President To Lam’s visit to Canada on September 24, 2026, Human Rights Watch said today. In a September 22 letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Governor General Louise Arbour, Human Rights Watch expressed concerns that Vietnam’s agreements with Canada in recent years committing to human rights reforms have not resulted in improved respect for rights. “The Vietnamese government’s intense crackdown on freedom of speech and association flies in the face of its human rights pledges to Canada,” said Patricia Gossman, senior Asia associate director at Human Rights Watch. “Canadian leaders should be clear that respect for human rights is crucial for strong diplomatic relations and trade deals.” During To Lam’s rule, Vietnam has held more than 160 political prisoners under draconian laws that criminalize free expression and peaceful activism for human rights and democracy. During the first nine months of 2026, Vietnamese courts convicted and sentenced at least 28 activists, including the prominent bloggers Hoang Thi Hong Thai and Huynh Ngoc Tuan, to long prison terms. Police arrested at least 39 other people for allegedly criticizing the government or affiliating with disfavored religious or political groups. The Vietnamese government has largely failed to implement legal reforms it promised to undertake in its free trade and partnership agreements, including its pledge to Canada to ratify International Labour Organization Convention No. 87 on worker’s rights by January 2024. Prime Minister Carney and Governor General Arbour should publicly raise concerns about the Vietnamese government’s worsening rights record and make clear that its failures to adopt meaningful reforms will harm the bilateral relationship, including with respect to trade. The Canadian leaders should also raise the cases of specific political prisoners, including Pham Doan Trang, a writer and human rights advocate; Can Thi Theu, a land rights activist; Pham Chi Dung and Nguyen Tuong Thuy, independent journalists; Hoang Duc Binh, a labor activist; Le Dinh Luong, Nguyen Van Tuc, Tran Duc Thach, Tran Van Bang, and Nguyen Trung Ton, democracy campaigners. “Prime Minister Carney should press Vietnam to immediately release everyone detained for peacefully exercising their basic rights,” Gossman said. “This will both send a strong message to Vietnam and to other countries having dealings with Hanoi.”

While Brussels and Ottawa desire a deeper partnership born of Trump-era volatility, the EU has no legal framework to accommodate it Don’t get This Is Europe delivered to your inbox? Sign up here The EU and Canada, Ursula von der Leyen said last week, “see the world with the same eyes”, with shared stances on everything from AI to the climate crisis, the Ukraine war and the unholy chaos unleashed by the current occupant of the White House (OK, she didn’t actually say that last bit. But I like to think she almost certainly thought it.) So, the European Commission president went on, Canada should become “the first associate member of the EU”. In the audience, Mark Carney beamed with delight. The next day, Canada’s prime minister enthusiastically embraced the idea of an “alliance for the future”, to build “collective resilience” through “deep cooperation”. Continue reading...
