What’s left to say about Australia’s ball-tampering? The answer is everything | Geoff Lemon

What’s left to say about Australia’s ball-tampering? The answer is everything | Geoff Lemon

The story from the 2018 Test in South Africa will stay alive for years more, unless it is finally put to sleep with the truth of what happened Add it to the immeasurable list of things that you can blame Covid for. Without the pandemic, Australia’s Test team would have headed to South Africa in February 2021, less than three years after the 2018 sandpaper scandal saw them come home from Johannesburg in disarray. With memories fresh, the attention would have been intense on the returning players: headlined by sacked captain Steve Smith, his replacement Tim Paine, and principal antagonist David Warner, with a support act of bowlers Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. At least, though, that prompt rematch would have lanced the boil of Australian cricket’s great modern humiliation, after Cameron Bancroft was caught sandpapering the match ball in the third Test at Cape Town. Instead, a lack of appetite for pandemic-era touring saw Cricket Australia cancel the 2021 tour before kicking a replacement years down the road, and while there have been white-ball trips in the interim, it has now taken eight years for an Australian Test return to supersede their ill-starred previous visit. South Africa in running to stage Africa’s first Olympics as 2036 race hots up

Qatar frontrunners of bidders, with India and Hungary Turkey, Germany and Korea to present to IOC next month South Africa is in the hunt to stage Africa’s first Olympics after it was named as one of seven countries that will formally present its case to host the 2036 Games in November. However its bid, which would likely be spread across Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, is seen as a distinct outsider, with Qatar widely regarded as the frontrunners ahead of India and Hungary. South Africa shootings leave 27 killed

South Africa shootings leave 27 killed

It has been a deadly night in South Africa, with 27 people killed in two separate shooting incidents. Police say 17 people were shot dead at a tavern outside Johannesburg by suspects armed with assault rifles, while another 10 were killed near Cape Town when gunmen opened fire at a venue selling grilled meat. No arrests have been made as police search for the attackers. Initial investigations suggest one shooting may have been linked to a turf war between illegal miners, while the other could have stemmed from a business rivalry. France 24 correspondent Eurice Masson reports the latest from South Africa.

‘It’s hard to sell a house when it’s covered in baboon faeces’: Cape Town divided over plan to remove its monkeys

Two troops of chacma baboons are breaking into homes and shops but animal rights activists insist coexistence is the answer Cape Town’s city council has said it will “imminently” round up two baboon troops coming into repeated conflict with residents . The animals will be sterilised and permanently moved to a newly constructed sanctuary. The plan has been fiercely criticised by animal rights activists, who say the monkeys should remain roaming freely, and that less destructive options have not been properly considered. Cape Town’s baboon problem has been brewing since the 2000s, after the city stopped culling troops in the late 1990s after pressure from the public. But in the past two years it has reached boiling point. A 2025 census found that the population had grown by a third since 2000, from 360 baboons to 493, now living in 12 managed troops. Mass shootings in South Africa leave at least 27 dead

Cape Town: At least 27 people were killed in two separate mass shootings near South Africa's two largest cities, police said on Sunday. The South African Police Service said 17 people were killed on Saturday night after suspects armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols opened fire at a bar in Wedela township, southwest of Johannesburg. In a separate incident, police said 10 people were killed in a mass shooting at a store in Lwandle, near Cape Town, at around 1am on Sunday. The latest attacks come only days after a mass shooting at a house party near the east coast city of Durban left 11 people dead, including a pregnant woman. Police said no arrests had been made in either of the latest shootings and that preliminary reports indicated authorities were searching for multiple suspects in both cases. Investigations into the incidents are ongoing.

Mass sardine die-off pits survival of South Africa’s penguins against fishers’ livelihoods

Mass sardine die-off pits survival of South Africa’s penguins against fishers’ livelihoods

Known as the ‘energy bars of the sea’ the fish are a key food source for many species, but closing fisheries to allow numbers to recover would cost millions It began on 28 July, when fishers near Saldanha Bay on the west coast of South Africa reported seeing dead sardines (also known as pilchards) floating at sea. Then, in early August, more dead sardines began washing up on beaches near Cape Town. In the weeks that followed, similar reports came in from places across a vast area spanning 2,600km (1,600 miles) of coastline , such as Henties Bay in Namibia and Mbotyi in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. Cooking Oil-Powered Plane to Fly Tourists to Antarctica

That’s from a headline today on Business Insider Africa, which says that White Desert, a luxury-tourism company, will soon operate flights between Cape Town and South Africa with jet fuel supplied by Sasol, a South African energy and chemicals company. Passengers will pay between $16,500 and $120,000 for the privilege, depending on the tour package.…

AvTalk Episode 385: “Looking into” that low flypast

AvTalk Episode 385: “Looking into” that low flypast

On this week’s episode of AvTalk, we discuss the low Airlink flypast in Cape Town, what’s been lost in the discussion so far, and what the South African civil aviation authority has to say about it. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy warns airlines to avoid Russian airspace as drones play an ever increasing role in the war between Russia and Ukraine. German authorities blame Russia for the recent explosive-laden drone in Leipzig. The FAA is moving to fire a pair of controllers who left the La Guardia tower early on the day of the crash between an Air Canada CRJ and ARFF truck. But the situation isn’t as straightforward as it seems. South Korean officials move to charge seven officials from the transport ministry with falsifying documents after the Jeju Air crash in Muan. And US airlines continue the race to be as premium as possible.
