Chris Fagan leaves Brisbane with nothing more to prove after building one of the great AFL teams | Jonathan Horn

Chris Fagan leaves Brisbane with nothing more to prove after building one of the great AFL teams | Jonathan Horn

The 65-year-old steps down with the Lions’ dynasty firmly in place, having put the club on an unprecedented upward trajectory Coaching can take grown men to dark places. Justin Longmuir was in that place late on Saturday afternoon after the AFL grand final . During the presentation, he began to topple over, like someone suffering abdominal pain or warming up for a pilates class. In reality, it was probably a body going into shock. We shouldn’t use words like “grief” when we talk about losing a game of football. What happened to Fremantle and Longmuir was akin to someone running over the family pet. Longmuir, a farmer, would scoff at such a comparison. But the hardest thing for anyone associated with Fremantle is finding the right measure of hurt – do you hide under the doona for a week, do you skip the country, do you employ a bit of gallows humour, or do you take pride in how well they played? There is no precedent or playbook for how to respond to a loss like that. Chris Fagan was in a very different place. At first, he was utterly wrung out. Those around him seemed conscious of giving him space. It took him several minutes to gather himself, to actually enjoy himself. Within half an hour he had reverted to type – deflecting all praise, commending the opposition, reminding his players to be humble. Continue reading...

‘I needed to change’: Peter O’Mahony on ditching hard-edged ritual, and his love of gardening

‘I needed to change’: Peter O’Mahony on ditching hard-edged ritual, and his love of gardening

The former Ireland captain talks about allowing his own feelings, why every coach except Andy Farrell has been ‘a bit mad’, and pain over a ruthless exit from Munster “It’s a natural human instinct, especially as an athlete, that you don’t want to lose,” Peter O’Mahony says on a quiet evening in Dublin as a new rugby season looms over us. “But at times it got in my way and caused despair. I honestly don’t know where that deep-down hatred came from but it used to derail me at times.” The former captain of Munster, Ireland and the Lions is settling into his second year of retirement and the taciturn grit and uncompromising commitment which defined his career have been replaced by more complex reflections. O’Mahony is a fascinating character and I ask whether he would have carried the same competitive zeal if he had been a wizard at, for example, chess or mathematics. Continue reading...

Brisbane’s AFL dynasty is built on sheer talent, a loyal coach and their love of a dire situation | Jonathan Horn

Brisbane’s AFL dynasty is built on sheer talent, a loyal coach and their love of a dire situation | Jonathan Horn

Chris Fagan kept faith in his Lions which meant they could thrive with the weight of the football world upon them – and rip out Fremantle hearts There is no precedent for what happened at the MCG on Saturday. There have been devastating finals losses before – the Bulldogs losing the 1997 preliminary final to Adelaide and St Kilda losing the 2009 grand final to Geelong immediately spring to mind. A senior St Kilda staffer described the rooms after that game as resembling “a casualty ward following a mass disaster”. Thankfully, we don’t talk about sport like that any more. The modern athlete and the modern sporting club is better able to put their world into some sort of perspective. The prevailing mood in the rooms, in the stands and on the trains on Saturday was a mix of desolation and bewilderment. Part of it was Fremantle’s history. Part of it was the decision to activate Wharfie Time. Part of it was just how quickly it all happened. You establish an identity and for more than three decades you scratch, claw and hope. And in five minutes, your heart is ripped out. Continue reading...

Brisbane roar back to seal three-peat and break Fremantle hearts in AFL grand final classic

Brisbane roar back to seal three-peat and break Fremantle hearts in AFL grand final classic

Lions beat Dockers 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) at electric MCG Wharfie Time backfires as Lions surge home in closing minutes The Brisbane Lions secured a historic third-straight AFL premiership, defeating Fremantle 14.12 (96) to 12.17 (89) at the MCG. In a barely believable grand final, the defending premiers ended with a four-goal spree in the final four minutes, including the final two from Logan Morris, that followed the Dockers’ Wharfie Time activation. At that stage Fremantle led by 17 points, but the Dockers folded afterwards. Brisbane finished like a freight train on an afternoon that began with Kylie Minogue’s sparkling performance that featured The Loco-Motion. It was only the second time since 1981 that a team has won the grand final after trailing at three-quarter-time, following Geelong’s comeback over St Kilda in 2009. Continue reading...

The Dockers can underline that defence wins premierships as they hunt a first flag while the Lions have the firepower to claim a slice of history Sign up for our free weekly AFL newsletter Fremantle stand on the precipice of immortality with a first AFL premiership now just one win away. But Brisbane have their own date with destiny as the two-time reigning premiers meet the best side of the home-and-away campaign in the grand final at the MCG. The Dockers have already broken new ground with a 14-match winning streak and a club record 19 victories that earned a second minor premiership in their 32nd season. The early dominance was enough to lay down a marker as the team to beat before a pair of stumbles on the run home were perhaps the first sign they could still be weighed down by history . Lions and Irons: the Dockers derby – a photo essay

Lions and Irons: the Dockers derby – a photo essay

For the first time in 14 years, Millwall and West Ham faced each other in their 100th meeting. Documentary photographer Adam Isfendiyar was at the Den to record the fans’ matchday experience On 19 September 2026, Millwall hosted West Ham at the Den. It was the 100th competitive meeting between the clubs, and the first in 14 years. The two teams are separated and connected by the Thames. They were formed around the heavy industries of east London’s docklands in the late 19th century and were geographically much closer then – Millwall on the Isle of Dogs and Thames Ironworks, from which West Ham emerged, around Canning Town. Before Millwall relocated south of the Thames to New Cross in 1910, both were north of the river and only a little over two miles apart. Straight to the point: graffiti on a wall near the Den. AFL finals: where the Sydney v Fremantle preliminary final will be won and lost

The Swans are within touching distance of an unlikely grand final spot while the Dockers have their campaign for a first premiership back on track Sign up for our free weekly AFL newsletter Sydney’s season was meant to be dead and buried by now. The club-imposed suspension of five players for breaching club standards was thought to have weakened the side to such an extent that a straight-sets finals exit was all but guaranteed. But while the spotlight was on the absent players, a galvanised group of those who remained – one still sprinkled with stardust – dialled up the heat to stun Brisbane and surge into a home preliminary final. The emotion-charged triumph made the Swans the 13th team to win a qualifying final by more than 50 points since 2000. Eleven of the previous 12 teams then earned a spot in the decider. But for all of their newfound momentum, Dean Cox’s side have to overcome the loss of another pivotal player after captain Callum Mills sustained a serious knee injury against the Lions. The Swans have turned doubters into believers with the way their players have stepped up in the face of adversity. But it would be another chapter in a story for the ages if they can beat the minor premiers to reach a third grand final in five seasons. Continue reading...
