Damilola: The Untold Story review – John Boyega’s trauma after losing his childhood friend is haunting

Damilola: The Untold Story review – John Boyega’s trauma after losing his childhood friend is haunting

The actor and his sister were with the 10-year-old on the night he was murdered. For the first time, along with the caretaker who found him bleeding, they share their terror – and celebrate their friend Next month marks 26 years since the killing of 10-year-old Damilola Taylor prompted a wave of grief and incredulity across the UK. Damilola had arrived in London from Nigeria just a few months earlier, with his mother, Gloria, his brother, Tunde, and his sister, Gbemi. His father, Richard, remained in Lagos, intending – like the patriarchs of many diasporic families – to join his wife and children at a later date. But that reunion would never come. On 27 November 2000, while en route from the local library to the family’s home on the North Peckham Estate in south London, Damilola was set upon by the brothers Ricky and Danny Preddie, 13 and 12 respectively. He was attacked with a glass bottle, severing the femoral artery in his left leg, and was found bleeding heavily in a stairwell. Shortly after, Damilola was pronounced dead at nearby King’s College hospital. Continue reading...

Absence of violence in Drumcree does not make standoff any less significant

Absence of violence in Drumcree does not make standoff any less significant

Row comes amid rising division and a tendency towards cynical political posturing in Northern Ireland Three decades ago, it took the deaths of three Roman Catholic children – the Quinn brothers, Jason, nine, Mark, 10, and 11-year-old Richard – in a petrol bomb attack to bring an end to the Drumcree dispute. “No road is worth a life, let alone the lives of three little boys,” the Orange Order’s County Armagh chaplain said at the time. It is perhaps extraordinary to think that this could ever have needed saying – but that was then. Northern Ireland is very different place today. Continue reading...

The Cameroon civil society groups taking on gender-based violence

The Cameroon civil society groups taking on gender-based violence

August 2026 has been a particularly tragic month for women in Cameroon, as eight cases of femicides were recorded in eight days. These figures add to the sixty or so cases already recorded since the start of the year by the Ministry of Women's Empowerment and the Family. On the ground, associations are mobilising to provide legal and psychological support to families in a country where a complaint of domestic violence rarely leads to a conviction. Indira Ayuk, Richard and Giresse Ngaana report from Yaoundé.

Who better to defend Reform’s latest millions than Honest Bob Jenrick? | John Crace

Who better to defend Reform’s latest millions than Honest Bob Jenrick? | John Crace

The man who once helped Richard ‘Dirty’ Desmond save a load of tax was wheeled out to face Laura Kuenssberg You wait years for one party donation of £36m and then two come along at once . Reform can hardly believe its luck. All hail the crypto billionaires. Tacky pale turquoise suits all round. And Nigel Farage won’t have to worry about spending any of his own money – if you can call the £5m freebie his own money – on his security. Nor do those champagne and oysters lunches to discuss loose change donations of £500K from people living overseas pay for themselves. From now on Reform won’t need to bother getting out of bed for anything less than eight figures. Fair to say that if it had been Labour or the Tories trousering £72m from Christopher Harborne and Ben Delo then Reform would be on full outrage rampage. How the political system was rigged against it and how the two main parties are hotwired cash machines. In bed with the super-rich. But since the money is heading towards its own bank account, everyone in the party is totally chilled. This is just the way life ought to be. Who wouldn’t want a country where two billionaires can attempt to buy the democratic process? Continue reading...
