As You Like It review – there are no mere players in the RSC’s ravishing all-male escapade

As You Like It review – there are no mere players in the RSC’s ravishing all-male escapade

Royal Shakespeare theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon With a WWE-style wrestling match, playful eroticism and a fine cast including Hamilton’s Jonathan Groff, this is an exquisite production ‘To liberty, and not to banishment,” exclaims Celia to Rosalind, the exile who finds freedom in her disguise as a man. It is a key statement in Shakespeare’s transformative, gender-bending pastoral comedy, just before the usurping Duke Frederick’s court is replaced by the romance of the Forest of Arden. That big reveal brought a prolonged technical difficulty on the opening night of director Daniel Evans’ all-male production, which was paused for well over an hour so it could be fixed. The technical hitch aside, it is a ravishing staging, with stunning visual effects. There is little comedy or light in the severe court, which contains an intimidating physicality to reflect Duke Frederick’s thuggery, with slaps, shoves and a magnificently constructed WWE-style wrestling match, complete with bunny girls keeping score. It is replaced by Arden’s verdant hills on Anisha Fields’ exquisite set, so beautiful they verge on the voluptuous. The black Elizabethan gowns of the court, Puritan-like but flecked with ornament, and designed by Colin Richmond, are stunning too, as is the chequered shadow-play of the early scenes, in Ryan Day’s lighting design. The breathtaking contrast of the switch between worlds is inevitably lost, following the long wait of the technical problem, but is nonetheless beautifully envisioned. Continue reading...

Whaur’s Yer Wullie Shakespeare Noo? review – when John Home outdid Stratford’s Bard

Whaur’s Yer Wullie Shakespeare Noo? review – when John Home outdid Stratford’s Bard

Òran Mór, Glasgow Brian Logan revisits the 18th-century production of Home’s Douglas in a shouty comedy about nationalism, religion and the power of theatre It is the most famous heckle in Scottish theatre history. In an exclamation of nationalist zeal after a performance of Douglas at Edinburgh’s Canongate playhouse in 1756, an audience member declared playwright John Home to be better than England’s most revered dramatist. “Whaur’s yer Wullie Shakespeare noo?” went the cry. Safe to say posterity cares for Shakespeare more than Home, but the performance of Douglas remains a symbolic flashpoint. As presented by Brian Logan, writer, director and Guardian comedy critic, the play – and its excited reception – exemplifies the national and religious schisms that have played out in Scotland ever since. It is one of those theatrical events that meant more politically than it did artistically. At Òran Mór, Glasgow, until 3 October, then touring until 17 October Continue reading...

England’s housing courts at breaking point as renters battle no-fault evictions

England’s housing courts at breaking point as renters battle no-fault evictions

Courts said to be ‘overloaded’ as landlords sell properties and tenants with nowhere to go try to delay evictions It is a Wednesday afternoon at Stratford housing court, and every seat in the waiting room is full. Over the next few hours, a conveyor belt of tenants and lawyers file into the courtroom to discuss their housing disputes – up to 29 cases are dealt with in a single day. In one case, a tenant is trying to buy more time after receiving a section 21 no-fault eviction earlier in the year, before they were banned. He has had no luck finding emergency housing with his local council. Continue reading...
