He won a Nobel Prize. Then he had to make the kids’ lunches

He won a Nobel Prize. Then he had to make the kids’ lunches

STANFORD, California : Dr. Karl Deisseroth spent hours fielding congratulatory calls after learning early Monday that he had won a Nobel Prize for medicine for helping to open a new field of brain science called optogenetics. But it wasn't long before the California scientist asked for a break from all the attention for a more ordinary task: He needed to make school lunches for his children, who were asleep in the family home in Stanford, where their father had been speaking in the middle of the night with journalists and well-wishers. Deisseroth, 54, shared this year’s medicine prize with two researchers in Germany for their work in optogenetics, a field that combines light with genes to switch on and off neurons in living brains. A self-described night owl, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and Stanford University professor often works past midnight. After reviewing papers and emailing his students, he said he had just gone to lie down when he got the call from the Nobel Assembly in Stockholm. "I almost felt as if I’d lost the power of forming words,” he told The Associated Press, "but I recovered after a minute or two.” He regained speech quickly enough for remote interviews with AP science reporters. Speedy emails with the Stanford communications staff had helped put them in touch. "No real sleep was achieved,” he said an hour after the announcement. As the science reporters chatted with Deisseroth over the phone and Zoom, an AP photographer and videographer raced to his home in Stanford. The photographer arrived around 3:30 a.m. to find Halloween decorations outside the home but just one light on inside. He was worried he had the wrong house before mustering the courage to knock on the door. Dr. Michelle Monje-Deisseroth, the scientist's wife, answered and ushered the photographer into their home, where the Nobel winner was taking calls from the couch. Monje-Deisseroth, an HHMI investigator and Stanford paediatric neuro-oncologist, was at his side when she wasn’t making coffee for the Stanford communications staff who had joined the celebration. Deisseroth was surprised to hear his work had been honoured with a Nobel Prize, he told the AP, but his wife was not. Deisseroth recounted the research he conducted with fellow Nobel winners Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, and its real-world impact. "For me, I’m a physician-scientist. I am a psychiatrist. I care about patients and my patients who have autism, who have depression,” he said. "I care about the hope that this brings. But I’m also a basic scientist, and I care about understanding this amazing organ, the brain, and how it works and how it integrates and computes and delivers all the things that make us human.” As Deisseroth wrapped up the interviews, he told the Stanford staff he needed an hourlong break beginning at 6:30 a.m. His kids would be waking up, he said, and they would need lunches before leaving for school. When one of the Stanford representatives wondered if the neighbours would mind all the late-night commotion, Monje-Deisseroth shrugged it off. They live in faculty housing, she said. There are a lot of Nobels in the neighbourhood.

AI clone case: Tokyo court grants legal protection to human voices

AI clone case: Tokyo court grants legal protection to human voices

TOKYO: A Tokyo court has awarded legal protection to the human voice in a landmark case in which a popular Japanese anime voice actor demanded that TikTok close an account over its unauthorized use of artificial intelligence clone of his trademark baritone. The Tokyo District Court's decision Wednesday was the first acknowledgment of the right to one's voice in Japan. The ruling was good news for many anime voice actors at a time when they are increasingly concerned about the use of AI-generated versions of their voices on social media. The plaintiff, Kenjiro Tsuda, is an actor best known for his "lustrous and deep” voice in starring characters such as Kento Nanami in "Jujutsu Kaisen,” a popular anime series. In his lawsuit, Tsuda said that the anonymous operator of the TikTok account "Nanami" wrongfully profited by attracting viewers with his voice narrating in more than 180 videos about urban legends and paranormal phenomena, and asked for the material to be deleted. "The human voice is symbolic of individual personality, just like one's portrait," Presiding Judge Aya Takahashi said, according to a court document seen by The Associated Press. It is appropriate to consider the unauthorized use with an obvious intention to take advantage of the commercial appeal of Tsuda's voice "an infringement of publicity rights,” Takahashi said. As of November 2025, the account had more than 200,000 subscribers, with viewers often noting the similarities between the narrator's voice and Tsuda's. The defendant argued that the videos used AI-generated voice that sounded like Tsuda's but was not his, and that the videos did not damage the actor's reputation as a voice actor. The ruling dismissed Tsuda's demand that all the videos using his voice be deleted, because the account had already been closed. Wednesday's decision comes at a time of growing concern among Japanese voice actors about the AI cloning of their trademark voices in anime. In 2024, OpenAI announced plans to halt the use of one of its ChatGPT voices after "Her” actor Scarlett Johansson said it sounded "eerily similar” to her own. Last year, Oscar-winning actors Michael Caine and Matthew McConaughey made deals with voice-cloning company ElevenLabs to allow its AI technology to replicate their voices.

Dolly Parton’s estate accuses her nephew of threatening violence and to destroy his aunt’s legacy

Dolly Parton’s estate accuses her nephew of threatening violence and to destroy his aunt’s legacy

Dolly Parton 's estate accused the country music icon’s nephew of threatening to commit violence and destroy his aunt’s legacy and business empire in court filings submitted Tuesday and asked a judge to keep him away from its employees and business dealings. Court documents filed in Nashville offer the first signs of discord in a carefully managed estate process for one of the most beloved personalities in music and beyond. Bryan Seaver, who owns a company that provided Parton’s security detail and was handpicked by the star to announce her death from cancer last month, did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press requesting comment. In the temporary restraining order request filed by She’s Alive, the entity that manages and protects Parton’s professional property and business, and other court documents, it claims Seaver sent increasingly threatening messages over the last several weeks. She’s Alive is run by Danny Nozell, Parton’s longtime manager. Last week, "She’s Alive” terminated Seaver and Squadron Augmented Protection Services, saying his "terrorizing conduct made their continued retention untenable,” according to court documents. Picture credit: Reuters The court documents showcase a series of text messages and emails She's Alive says were sent by Seaver starting just before Parton's death. The messages begin with threats to destroy the brand, and then after her death, depict Seaver reveling in his newfound fame and calling himself an "international arms dealer." In one message written on Sept. 1 and included in the court documents, he said: "I’m going to set up a podcast dedicated to ruining Dolly’s brand partnerships and telling the violations these people have done on us. It’s going to be great. Or f--- pay me.” Seaver also claimed that he worked for private military contractors overseas during the Iraq War and used that experience as part of these threats, according to the complaint. The messages have resulted in Parton’s trusts and estates attorney leaving and employees of She’s Alive resigning, according to the court documents. The entity has also had to hire private security for its employees, including at their homes, the documents state. The restraining order is meant to stop Seaver from talking with or being within 1,000 feet (304.8 meters) of She’s Alive employees, attorneys and business partners. It also is meant to keep him from interfering with its business relationships. Parton wrote hundreds of songs, including classics like "Jolene,” "Coat of Many Colors” and "I Will Always Love You,” that earned a total of more than 100 million worldwide sales and more than 1 billion online streams.
