‘We need to keep focused, and Trent was a big help in this’ Alexander-Arnold set up opener in 2-0 win over Czechia Thomas Tuchel praised Trent Alexander-Arnold after the right-back impressed on his first England appearance since June 2025. Alexander-Arnold, who has a point to prove after missing out on a World Cup spot, was one of the big positives as Tuchel’s side recovered from their defeat to Spain by recording a comfortable 2-0 win away to Czechia in the Nations League on Tuesday. Alexander-Arnold proves his worth to England with trademark assist against Czechia | Jacob Steinberg

The full-back is one of the best passers England has produced: Thomas Tuchel must find a place for him It was the question nobody was asking: could Trent Alexander-Arnold do it against 10 game but limited Czechs on a mild Tuesday night in Prague? The answer was a resounding yes. Alexander-Arnold played well after starting for the first time under Thomas Tuchel, demonstrating his value to England by helping them work out the dreaded low block with a trademark assist for Anthony Gordon to settle the nerves in a game coloured by Czechia losing Pavel Sulc to a debatable red card midway through the first half. Defensive flux gives Tuchel headache but Alexander-Arnold could be remedy | Jacob Steinberg

Chopping and changing the back four has been a big feature for England this year and the Real Madrid man could be a solution England ended 2025 protected by a shield of deceptive strength. They went through qualifying for the World Cup without conceding a goal and secured a shutout during a routine friendly win against Wales. However, clean sheets have been harder to come by this year. England have kept four in 13 games in 2026, meaning it may not be long before Thomas Tuchel rethinks his suggestion that the way to deal with his side’s lack of control is to embrace chaos. There is, of course, an irony to telling Tuchel to sort out his defence. Isn’t this what we wanted? England were limp and passive when they lost their World Cup semi-final against Argentina. At least the mindset was positive when Tuchel’s side opened their Nations League campaign with a sprightly but flawed 3-2 defeat against Spain last Saturday. Continue reading...

Trent Alexander-Arnold recalled by England but with a warning from Thomas Tuchel

Real Madrid player must help improve defensive solidity Scott, Hall, Lewis-Skelly and Calvert-Lewin selected Thomas Tuchel has told Trent Alexander-Arnold he must bring defensive solidity to the England squad after giving him a surprise recall for the upcoming Nations League matches. The head coach has selected the Real Madrid right-back only once before – for the games against Andorra and Senegal in June last year. Tuchel made headlines when he did so by urging Alexander-Arnold to focus on the defensive side of his game or risk a slip that could undermine the team’s World Cup campaign. Continue reading...

Case not proven: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s England recall is based on patchy evidence

Case not proven: Trent Alexander-Arnold’s England recall is based on patchy evidence

Thomas Tuchel promises to play the full-back in his natural right-sided position but we have not seen enough of him this term to gauge his form Thomas Tuchel said Trent Alexander Arnold had enjoyed a good start to the season, which came as news to those in England who have not been watching him at Real Madrid. It also, in truth, came as news to those in Spain who have. If the England manager did not see enough in Alexander-Arnold to include him in the World Cup in the summer he has not really had the chance to see enough to change that decision as autumn begins. Two unremarkable league starts provide insufficient evidence with which to make a case for the full-back’s recall, or indeed his exclusion, but he is in the squad. Alexander-Arnold’s most high-profile match this season has been against Inter at the Santiago Bernabéu . That night, he started from the middle of midfield. At the pre-match press conference, José Mourinho had refused to answer a direct and apparently well-informed question about employing the right-back in midfield, given the absence through injury or suspension of Eduardo Camavinga, Arda Guler, Bernardo Silva, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Thiago Pitarch, as well as his determined conclusion that Jude Bellingham is better used further up.
