India retain Asian Games cricket title, Kim lands golf gold and military reprieve

India retain Asian Games cricket title, Kim lands golf gold and military reprieve

NAGOYA, Japan: ‌India beat arch-rivals Pakistan on a converted baseball field to retain their Asian Games cricket title on Saturday as South Korean golfer Tom Kim clinched a gold medal and a military service exemption. In a late soccer showdown at Toyota Stadium, Eom Ji-sung scored the winner as South Korea held off Japan 1-0 in another Asian Games final to extend their dynasty to a fourth successive men's gold. Two years before cricket returns to the Olympics, India cruised to a 19-run win over Pakistan, with Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma smashing fifties in the T20 final. "A huge occasion when you are playing Pakistan in the final, the whole country is watching and you have that pressure," said India captain Shreyas Iyer. A jet-lagged Kim felt the pressure on the final day at the Kasugai Country Club, two years after narrowly missing out on a medal at the Paris Olympics. The four-times ‌US PGA Tour winner played superbly, though, carding a final-round 64 to finish three strokes clear. South Korea offers Asian Games champions an exemption from compulsory military service. "This day was the longest day I think I’ve ever had in my life. It’s only been six, five hours ‌but it is definitely the longest, and I’m just glad it’s done," said a relieved Kim, ‌who also won a team silver for South Korea. The South Korean men's soccer team can also skip military service thanks ‌to Swansea City winger Eom, who swooped on ‌a loose ball parried down by goalkeeper Rui Araki and smashed in a left-foot shot on the hour-mark. Japan battled desperately to the finish, with midfielder Hisatsugu Ishii striking the post in the 79th minute, but ‌the hosts were denied for a third successive final against the Koreans in the Under-23 tournament. Planning problems The Games has been blighted by organisational problems, drawing complaints from teams about accommodation and transport. The women's hockey final was delayed by nearly an hour on Friday after the shuttle buses taking India and China's teams got stuck in traffic en route to the venue. Japan's Olympic Committee president said Aichi-Nagoya organisers needed to reflect on their planning after they struggled to manage logistics for 17,000 athletes and officials. The home athletes have done the country proud, though, and will finish with a national record haul of over 260 medals, smashing their previous best (218) at Hiroshima 1994. China will top the table easily once again. They had 169 golds among 341 medals at the end of the day's competition, with second-placed Japan on 83 golds. Coleman Wong won Hong Kong a first men's tennis singles gold and a provisional berth to the Los Angeles Olympics with victory over China's Wu Yibing. "It’s going to be my first Olympics, it’s going to be amazing," said the 22-year-old world number 100. Japan's Kae Tokumoto and Saki Tsukamoto won padel's first gold medal on the racket sport's Games debut, beating an ‌Indonesian duo for the women's pairs gold. Iran's proud taekwondo record was burnished by towering Olympic champion Arian Salimi, who bested Uzbek Marat Mavlonov for the +80kg gold, three years after taking silver at Hangzhou. "I love pain, I love fighting and I love my life,” said the tough 22-year-old. Anti-doping testers said two more athletes had failed drug tests, dealing provisional suspensions to Tajik tennis player Issamjon Sharifov and Kazakh middle-distance runner Aiana Bolatbekkyzy. In a huge programme of 469 gold medals, the final two will be contested on Sunday in the equestrian in Tokyo before the Games end with a closing ceremony at ‌Nagoya's Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium.

The T20 world champions posted 211 for six in their 20 overs with Abhishek Sharma scoring 61 and Tilak Varma 51 not out, before Hasan Nawaz’s valiant 96 saw Pakistan come up short at 192 for six. The neighbouring countries only meet in international tournaments and on neutral ground because of political tensions and the captains refused the normal handshakes before the match on Saturday. Afterwards, the jubilant India players paraded their national flag around the ground. The clash on a converted baseball field in Japan was new ground for even these rivals and their hundreds of millions of fans who were watching back home on television. Continue reading...

Abhishek blazes fastest century in full-member T20s as India sweep Afghanistan

Abhishek blazes fastest century in full-member T20s as India sweep Afghanistan

India opener Abhishek Sharma smashed the fastest Twenty20 International century by a batter from a full-member nation on Thursday, blasting a 30-ball hundred as ‌the hosts thrashed Afghanistan by 127 runs in Delhi to complete a 3-0 series sweep. The 26-year-old hammered 108 off 34 balls, striking nine fours and 11 sixes before falling to Rashid Khan. His hundred eclipsed the previous India record of a 35-ball century set by stalwart Rohit Sharma against Sri Lanka in 2017. Fellow opener and wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson chipped in with 50 off 35 deliveries as India posted 221-7 after Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bowl. Afghanistan's reply never took off as the visitors slumped to 47-4 and were eventually ‌bowled out for 94 in 14.1 overs. Captain Ibrahim Zadran was the only Afghanistan batter to cross 20, making 25, while India all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy and spinner Ravi ‌Bishnoi dismantled the batting lineup with three wickets apiece. "I feel ‌it's all dependent on my process before every series," Abhishek said. "It's very ‌particular for me, against who I ‌play and their bowlers, how I'm going to utilise the powerplay... The way I play, it's very important for the captain ‌and the coach to be on your side. "You have to get surety. I feel this is because of them as well... It's very simple from day one. I just want to express myself. Just see the ball and hit the ball. "You can't be sure you'll be doing well all the time, but the culture we've developed in our team is to dominate, and it's been going well so far." India had already wrapped up the series with a seven-wicket victory in the second T20 on Tuesday, having opened the contest with another convincing seven-wicket win on Sunday. "Definitely disappointed," Zadran said. "We improved a little bit in the powerplay. Totally happy with the intent... "Yes, we will struggle a little bit in one or two series, ‌but with time we will improve. If we don't have intent, it is really hard to beat international teams. "We need to play more games and more series, especially against the biggest teams. That's how we can improve." India next face Japan in a one-off T20 on September 22 before beginning their Asian Games campaign at the quarter-final stage six days later.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has to be patient, says India coach Gambhir

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has to be patient, says India coach Gambhir

India coach Gautam Gambhir said Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for his chance ‌to break into the side after he left the 15-year-old prodigy on the sidelines of their three-match Twenty20 series sweep against Afghanistan. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson opened for India in the series, with Abhishek scoring the third-fastest century in T20 internationals in Thursday's 127-run victory in New Delhi. Sooryavanshi, who was the highest scorer in this year's ‌Indian Premier League, made his international debut against England in July but the top-order batter failed to ‌make an impact as the hosts dominated ‌India in the T20 series. He scored two fifties ‌against Zimbabwe in Harare ‌later that month but has not played for India since. "Whether you’re a 15-year-old or ‌a 30-year-old, when you have to wait for your opportunity you have to wait for your opportunity," Gambhir told reporters after the match. "We know the kind of talent he has and what he can do, but someone who has been performing for the last two to three years will always be ahead of someone who has just entered the team." Sooryavanshi will travel to Nagoya for India's Asian Games campaign, with a one-off T20 against hosts ‌Japan set for Tuesday before the Asiad quarter-final on September 28. "Whenever he gets his run, he will get a longer run as well ... we want competition and talent in the dressing room," Gambhir added.
