How a village in Uttar Pradesh revived India’s lost art of public debate

How a village in Uttar Pradesh revived India’s lost art of public debate

As political discourse in the country is increasingly suppressed and polarised, in a village tent, a local magistrate’s attempt to bring back a national tradition attracted thousands of participants The setting for perhaps the country’s biggest exercise in public debate was quintessential rural India: fields of green paddy, a pond, a temple. On a normal day, as dusk falls in the village of Ajgara, in Uttar Pradesh, people gather beside the pond to chat about the price of crops, the weather, or the theft of a goat. But for more than a month, metaphysics and ethical dilemmas replaced the usual topics. Is it permissible to use deceit to defeat an evil enemy? Is a lie justified to save a life? What is the nature of reality? Continue reading...

El Nino heat could trigger 451,000 extra deaths by 2027

El Nino heat could trigger 451,000 extra deaths by 2027

BENGALURU, India: This year's powerful El Nino and the record global heat it's driving, along with severe droughts, wildfires and shrinking water supplies, could lead to nearly half a million more deaths worldwide by the end of February, according to a research report released Wednesday. The grim warning by the University of Chicago-based Climate Impact Lab says that as many as 451,000 more heat-related deaths between June and the end of February could be attributed to El Nino, compared with heat deaths expected in a typical year. The heaviest toll, the group says, is expected in poorer countries, already struggling with food insecurity and high energy costs, partly due to climate change and the fallout of the war in Iran. Michael Greenstone, a co-founder of the group and the study's co-author, said the heat danger will likely persist beyond February - even though this El Nino is expected to end by then. The fallout of the weather phenomenon could be felt well into next summer, he added. The research, he said, shows that heat is most dangerous in places that are already hot and relatively poor. "If you’re already in a hot place, the extra couple of degrees are going to be much more dangerous,” he said. Wealthier places, he added, generally have greater access to air conditioning, reliable water supplies and functioning health systems. The study combined seasonal temperature forecasts with localized estimates of how high temperatures affect mortality across more than 24,000 regions worldwide. Researchers estimated the additional heat-related deaths by comparing deaths expected under El Nino-driven high temperatures with deaths expected if temperatures remained similar to what they have been in the last three decades. The projected fatalities are for the entire El Nino period, from June 2026 until the end of February 2027. The study by Greenstone and his colleagues also warns that the Global South - a term that isn't geographical but a reference to developing countries in general - will bear the heaviest burden of the excessive heat. The researchers behind the report found that the Sahel region in Africa - countries along the semiarid southern fringe of the Sahara Desert - is expected to be the hardest-hit, with about 66,800 additional deaths caused by El Nino-driven heat. Other major hot spots include South and Southeast Asia and parts of Latin America, according to the report. The researchers project about 19,400 additional heat-related deaths across the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, as well as 19,300 in Indonesia, 15,800 in India and 13,300 in Brazil. With such staggering numbers, there are recommended measures that governments can take, the report says. They include heat-warning systems, cooling centers, hydration stations, protections for outdoor workers, expanded hospital capacity and targeted outreach to elderly people and other vulnerable groups. The authors also call for what they describe as anticipatory financing, so governments can move resources before dangerous heat peaks. Abhiyant Tiwari, a heat expert at NRDC India who was not involved in the study, said the report’s projections should serve as a call to action rather than be another reason for alarm. But while it's one thing to have well thought-out plans - as India does - implementing these plans and raising needed funds remains a challenge, he said. "The real measure of our preparedness is not how many heat warnings we issue, but how effectively we protect people and reduce preventable deaths,” Tiwari added. El Nino is a natural climate pattern, but this year’s unusually strong event is occurring on a planet already warmed by human-caused climate change, increasing the risks from extreme heat. The Climate Impact Lab said global land temperatures during this El Nino could be higher by about 1.2 Celsius (2.1 Fahrenheit), producing 44% more extremely hot days than in a typical year. The report said those temperature increases may mirror conditions that climate change could make common some 20 years from now. That's why this El Nino could offer a preview of what's ahead as the planet continues to warm, the report said. It's also an opportunity for decision-makers "to see exactly where emergency actions can be taken now to save tens of thousands of lives,” the authors say.

Indian court rejects Adani plea on duty-free shops

Indian court rejects Adani plea on duty-free shops

NEW DELHI: An Indian court has ruled that goods sold at duty-free shops are not immune from domestic laws, dealing a blow to the Adani Group's airport sales of nicotine pouches, which New Delhi calls illegal and regards as drugs. In a case widely seen as setting a precedent on duty-free sales, Adani in April challenged Indian authorities who said its Mumbai international ‌airport shops illegally stocked and sold nicotine pouches, one of the world's fastest-growing nicotine products, which remain unapproved in India. Billionaire Gautam Adani's group manages eight ‌airports in India and has an ambitious $11 billion expansion plan, ‌including for duty-free shops, to capitalise on the growing demand for ‌air travel. While Indian authorities told the ‌court that stocking nicotine pouches was a "substantive violation" of drug laws and a "serious public health risk", Adani denied any wrongdoing. Adani ‌argued in court that shops in international departure areas are outside the reach of domestic regulations as they sit beyond India's territorial jurisdiction. The High Court in Mumbai disagreed in an order issued late Tuesday. "Such goods would be subject to the law of the land and would be governed by the regulatory regime in force even if the transaction takes place in the DFS (duty free shops), beyond the customs barrier," the order said. "The domestic regulatory regime will apply in full force to such goods brought into the DFS within the Indian territorial jurisdiction," it added. Adani Group did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. In its court submissions, Adani also argued that ‌nicotine pouches are "not a drug" and a "recent innovation", and attract no scrutiny under Indian laws - a position New Delhi disagreed with. The court said it could not answer that question at this stage and instead said Adani was free to make representations before Indian drug regulators, with supporting material, and the regulator can decide that on its merits.

Dubai property 2026: India tops international buyer interest, US surges to second

Dubai property 2026: India tops international buyer interest, US surges to second

Dubai: An analysis conducted by the real estate platform DXBinteract showed that Indian investors topped the list of international interest in buying properties in Dubai, with a share of 16.3% of the total interest and digital search observed during the period from June to August 2026, while the United States recorded a remarkable jump to occupy second place with a share of 13%. The platform found that America’s second-place ranking on the list represents the highest ranking the United States has ever recorded in its readings, making the rise in American interest the most prominent shift during the analysis period, and an indication of the expansion of the potential demand base for Dubai real estate to include markets that were not ahead in previous rankings. According to the data, the United Kingdom came in third place with 10.7%, while Pakistan was fourth with a share of 5.4%, followed by Saudi Arabia with 4.4%, and then Egypt with 3.7%. Canada came in seventh with a share of 3.5%, followed by Australia with 3%, then France with 2.9%, and Singapore with 2.5%. The top 10 countries collectively accounted for 65.4% of the observed international attention, while the top 20 countries accounted for 80.4%, and the remaining 19.6% was distributed among the rest of the markets. Fatih Al-Masdi, founder of the real estate platform, DXBinteract, said that the Dubai Land Department provides accurate and reliable data on transactions, prices, sizes, areas and projects, but it does not currently publish a public and updated database that allows for the classification of actual transactions according to the nationality of the buyer. Fatih Al-Masdi, founder of the real estate platform, DXBinteract. Picture credit: Supplied Al-Masdi added that this deficiency makes some of the rankings circulating about “the most purchasing nationalities” unverifiable at the level of the entire market. He explained that “the reports of some real estate companies regarding the nationalities of buyers mainly reflect the mix of their clients, not the entire market, as some companies specialise in certain clients.” Al-Masdi stressed that the analysis of search results, digital interest, and the distribution of platform visits by country provides, in his estimation, the best proactive indicator available for monitoring the source of international interest, in the absence of official, public, and up-to-date data on the nationalities of buyers. He stressed that these indicators are not a substitute for transaction data, but rather measure the stage that precedes it, when the potential buyer begins to research, compare and explore projects and prices. He said that “the high levels of international interest in Dubai real estate reflect the existence of a base of potential buyers that could turn into actual demand during the fourth quarter of 2026.” He added: "This data helps us identify the markets from which future demand may come, while actual transaction data remains the decisive indicator of whether interest will turn into buying." He explained that a decrease in a country’s digital presence should be interpreted as a decrease in detectable online interest, and not as a definitive judgment on the actual size of demand or the number of transactions. Interest from outside the country The DXBinteract real estate platform's analysis covers the period from June to August 2026, excluding domestic demand from within the UAE. The figures reflect the distribution of digital interest by country for potential demand, not data on confirmed transactions or buyer nationalities. Therefore, the published percentages reflect each country's share of the total interest coming from outside the UAE, and do not represent its share of total platform visits, including visits from the local market.
