Thrown in with Giggs and Beckham: how Manchester United tried to get Billy Kenny

Thrown in with Giggs and Beckham: how Manchester United tried to get Billy Kenny

Former Everton midfielder, known as the ‘Goodison Gazza’, recalls being made to feel special by Alex Ferguson in this autobiography extract “So this is the scouser ya been goin’ on aboot then …” My face turned Manchester United red. Scanning the room full of smiles and staring eyes, I identified the mystery Scottish voice as the man who’d just become the first player to score more than 20 league goals for the club since George Best in the 1960s. “Good answer,” replied Brian McClair after following up on my smile and nod by asking whether I supported Everton or Liverpool. “Ye’ll dee well ’ere laddie.” Brian Kidd had just introduced me to the Man United first team by silencing the room to draw attention to my presence. “Lads, this is Billy from up the road,” he said. I was still starstruck from seeing all these famous faces as my chauffeur for the day, Eric Harrison, pulled up in the car park at The Cliff a few minutes earlier. Paul McGrath. Mark Hughes. Bryan Robson. Kevin Moran. Norman Whiteside. I ticked them all off in my head. Thank fuck I was developing an ear for everyday Glaswegian because after a bit of piss-taking from the first-teamers about being a scouser, I found myself standing in an office at the end of a short and narrow corridor, shaking hands with another one. Andy Burnham’s Manchester City comments stir fresh tensions with Premier League

Government said to be unhappy at lack of warning Burnham previously criticised league’s Everton sanction Andy Burnham’s intervention in the Manchester City debate has revived tensions between the Premier League and the prime minister. Government officials are understood to be unhappy they were not given notice that the independent commission’s damning judgment of £900m of financial manipulation and “sham contracts” would be published this week, and Burnham’s response has not gone down well with several Premier League clubs concerned by his relationship with City’s owners. ‘Goodison Gazza’ Billy Kenny: ‘The only time I’ve had peace was when I was locked up’

‘Goodison Gazza’ Billy Kenny: ‘The only time I’ve had peace was when I was locked up’

Everton’s great lost talent of the 90s explains the drinking culture that enveloped him as a teenager, his time in jail, struggles with depression and how he got clean “I was just a kid and no one was there for me,” Billy Kenny says as he wipes away the tears of hurt and regret on a September afternoon in Liverpool. “I’m angry with Everton for not looking after me. “Listen, I’m no angel. I’ve played my part, but there are other people who played their part in the demise of Billy Kenny. So I’m still bitter and frustrated today, at the age of 53. It was an absolute waste of talent .” Continue reading...

Liverpool sink Everton and end derby drought after Olsson and Kapocs strike

Liverpool sink Everton and end derby drought after Olsson and Kapocs strike

Liverpool beat their local rivals Everton at Anfield in a Women’s Super League fixture for the first time as Beata Olsson’s early header and Cornelia Kapocs’s late finish were enough to end their long run of derby pain. After six wins from six visits to Anfield for Everton in the WSL era and even quips from their former manager Brian Sørensen in previous campaigns about making Anfield their “training pitch” during their persistent run of victories in this showpiece fixture, Liverpool could, at last, enjoy the bragging rights as their fans celebrated in the Kop after a thoroughly deserved 2-0 victory. James Garner keen to live up to ‘mini-Valverde’ tag after late England call

James Garner keen to live up to ‘mini-Valverde’ tag after late England call

Everton midfielder’s spirit and intelligence earned him another chance and he is eager to test himself against Spain in the Nations League on Saturday “It’s a very good comparison,” James Garner says, and he is not kidding. It came from Thomas Tuchel in March after the England manager had watched the Everton midfielder impress on his international debut against Uruguay . He was up against Federico Valverde and Tuchel went big with his praise. Garner was a “mini Valverde”, he said after the 1-1 draw at Wembley. It was surely too much, despite the prefix that Tuchel attached, yet it was possible to see where he was coming from. Like Valverde, Garner wants to operate in central midfield but he can play at right-back or on the wing. And like Valverde, who they called El Pajarito – or the Little Bird – when he was a kid, Garner can sometimes fly a bit under the radar. Continue reading...

Football Daily | Pints and points: the arguments for and against booze at football matches

Football Daily | Pints and points: the arguments for and against booze at football matches

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! Considering he is a lifelong Everton fan, it’s no surprise that Andy Burnham seems to be in favour of allowing fans to drink Tin at football matches . Bouts of boardroom turmoil, points deductions and assorted relegation battles mean the lot of an Evertonian is not always a happy one. The Prime Minister believes that if he and other fans fancy a sip or two to help ease the pain of watching Thierno Barry head wide of an open goal, then that ought to be their constitutional right as proud Englishmen. Sadly, no such right currently exists, as alcohol consumption within view of the pitch has been outlawed in the top five divisions of English football since the troubled times of the 1980s . Instead, thirsty match-goers are forced to endure an agonising wait of 45 whole minutes before rushing to the bar, joining long queues of fellow fans eager to buy pints of foaming shaft they must subsequently chug back, yard-of-ale style, in enough time to return to their seats for the start of the second half. Like anyone with a sense of football heritage, as soon as I read in yesterday’s Football Daily that Javier Aguirre had joined Valencia, I scrambled to see when they would play Anthony Gordon’s Barcelona. Sadly, it seems we’ll have to wait until the end of January for that particular reunion. Hey, fixture list, beep you” – Jim Hearson. If Thomas Tuchel believes that 99.9% of supporters he bumps into do not talk to him about his substitutions during the Argentina game (Football Daily Tuesday), has he noticed a significant percentage of fans turning on their heels and walking in the opposite direction muttering furiously to themselves when they spot him? I would estimate that this could encompass approximately 51.8% of England supporters in his orbit. Another cohort, which I would put at around 37.6%, may break down weeping and gnashing their teeth uncontrollably at a missed opportunity to beat a limited and cynical Argentinian team, thereby missing their opportunity to congratulate Thomas effusively on England’s knockout win over Democratic Republic of Congo” – Dexter O’ Riordan. This is an extract from our daily football email … Football Daily. To get the full version, just visit this page and follow the instructions . Continue reading...

Andy Burnham signals he may lift ban on alcohol in football stands

Prime minister says measure is discriminatory when fans of other sports are not similarly restricted Andy Burnham has signalled he may lift the ban on drinking alcohol in the stands at football matches, suggesting it is “unfair” for fans to be singled out when it is permitted for other sports. The prime minister, a committed Everton fan who still attends matches, said there was a case for trialling an end to the ban to bring football in line with rugby and cricket. Continue reading...

Jarrad Branthwaite embraces England call-up after injury nightmare

Jarrad Branthwaite embraces England call-up after injury nightmare

Defender has battled hamstring and groin problems Centre-half credits Munich clinic for turning point Jarrad Branthwaite has credited a “complex” rehabilitation programme in Germany, which analysed links between his injuries and his brain and movement, with his return to the England squad. The Everton defender’s fine start to the season has been rewarded with a place in Thomas Tuchel’s squad for the Nations League fixtures against Spain, Czechia and Croatia. If selected, it will be Branthwaite’s second appearance for the England senior side having been blighted by hamstring and groin problems in recent years. Continue reading...
