NRL grand final 2026: Sydney Roosters v Newcastle Knights – live

Updates from the men’s premiership decider at Accor Stadium Kick-off time in Sydney is 7.30pm AEDT/6.30pm AEST Any thoughts? Get in touch with an email The first wave of Knights successes came against a backdrop of uncertainty about what a post-industrial future might mean for the steel city. Two decades on, for better or worse, working-class Newcastle is now safer, more confident and outward-looking; also more expensive and exclusive. DCE has spoken to Channel 9 about the enormity of the occasion. To be honest, just because of the occasion of the grand final, it’s been really easy to put it to the side. I feel like the moment I’ve made it all about myself at any time of my career, it’s never really worked out too well. So real team focus today. Yeah, really good. The longer turnaround I feel really helped us. We were able to get extra recovery in and then build our week really nicely. So I feel like it was a great week of preparation. And now it’s just trusting that to go out and play… it’s not about any storyline for us tonight. It’s just about getting the job done. Continue reading...

Newcastle Knights’ tale burns bright but Sydney Roosters are built just for NRL’s grand occasion | Jack Snape

No matter how brilliant Sydney might prove to be on Sunday night, the 2026 grand final will be remembered for Newcastle’s presence in the decider Grudging favourite the Sydney Roosters meet rugby league’s forgotten child the Newcastle Knights in the NRL grand final on Sunday night. The recipe is delicious, its concoction somehow spiritual: the effect of the combined crossings of every finger in the Hunter Valley, urging just one more win in the Knights’ improbable run to the decider. Whatever the result, and no matter how brilliant the Roosters might prove to be, the occasion will be remembered for the Knights’ presence. They are, of course, outsiders against the formidable tricolours . The underdogs finished seventh, and the finals have already delivered them three upsets against the Rabbitohs, the Warriors and the Panthers. This Knights’ tale gleams more brightly one year after their wooden spoon. Continue reading...

NRL 2026 grand final: where the Sydney Roosters v Newcastle Knights decider will be won and lost | Angus Fontaine

It looks to be Sydney’s party, but riding a wave of form and belief Newcastle are primed to crash it with unstoppable force on Sunday After 210 games, 17,000 minutes and more than 10,000 points, it all comes down to the 2026 NRL grand final. One decider. Two desperate teams. The Roosters, a star-studded outfit with four premierships in 25 years and speed, power and tactical brilliance across the park. And the Knights, 25 years without a title and coming off a wooden spoon last year, yet riding an irresistible wave built on blue-collar courage and underdog characters. Continue reading...

Newcastle’s NRL grand final run is a ‘pinch me’ moment for veterans and youth alike | Jack Snape

Tyson Frizell waited 15 years to make a grand final while Fletcher Sharpe grew up watching Knights legends but wasn’t even alive for their last premiership Tyson Frizell has played 305 NRL games but has found he can no longer bear to watch the end of grand finals. “It usually gets switched off or I stop watching it as soon as that siren goes because – while you’re happy for everyone – it burns, those celebration of the boys,” he said. His 15-year career has earned him Blues and Kangaroos jerseys, but Frizell had never reached a season decider. Until this week, of course, thanks to an improbable Knights run that has brought the proud New South Wales city to life. Continue reading...

Newcastle find themselves the NRL’s fairytale team after scarcely believable return to glory | Nick Tedeschi

Newcastle find themselves the NRL’s fairytale team after scarcely believable return to glory | Nick Tedeschi

The Knights’ incredible preliminary final win over the Penrith Panthers showcased everything Justin Holbrook has done to turn the club around Few teams have been mired in mediocrity longer than the Newcastle Knights, a club from a region that few dispute is the heartland of rugby league in Australia. They are built on the legend of Joey and Chief and so many others but have, for the better part of the last quarter-century, been an irrelevance. No more. After one of the most compelling, controversial and climactic preliminary finals in the history of the game, the Knights are on their way to the 2026 NRL grand final just 12 months after claiming their fourth wooden spoon in 11 seasons. Hollywood’s finest scriptwriter could not have written the story of Newcastle’s rise over the last year – and even the most creative could not have put together what will live in folklore as one of the most dramatic grand final qualifiers the game has seen. Wallabies hold off world champion Springboks in chaotic Rugby Championship test

Wallabies hold off world champion Springboks in chaotic Rugby Championship test

Australia beat South Africa 42-38 to send World Cup warning Les Kiss’s side reduced to 11 men in final 15 minutes A year out from the World Cup, Australia have sent a huge warning shot to the competition, upsetting the two-time trophy winners South Africa with an extraordinary 42-38 win in Perth. On a weekend when the AFL and NRL delivered fairytale comebacks, the Wallabies trumped both rival codes, hammering rugby’s No 1 team with a skilful display that ended in bizarre circumstances when the men in gold held on despite being reduced to 11 players at the end. Fittingly, the victory found the Wallabies harnessing the aerial powers of Australian Rules and the rambunctious power of rugby league to dominate rugby’s world champions with a brilliant, inventive and courageous five-try performance that kept alive new coach Les Kiss’s unbeaten record and breathed new hope into the hearts of Australian fans nationwide. Toulouse lit up Super League but French fans miss out on TV coverage

Sylvain Houles’ newly promoted team finished alongside Catalans in mid-table but their big battle is for exposure By No Helmets Required Every now and then, something dramatic is required. No one could blame Sylvain Houles for threatening to quit rugby league if his Toulouse Olympique team were replaced in Super League next season by London Broncos. After all, he has just taken them to eighth in the table on half funding, finishing above their rivals Catalans Dragons for the first time in 25 years in the process. The rumour that Toulouse could be ranked 14th by IMG and relegated has since been quashed – to every sane league fan’s relief. Shane Richardson, the NRL head of strategy, says the aim is to build the code’s presence in France, not slash it in half. Continue reading...

Dance Monkey v the NRL: did Tones and I really turn down $90,000 a minute because she hates her own song?

For the first time in recent history there’ll be no pre-game entertainment at the NRL grand final. But everyone has a different story about what actually went down Emma, the NRL and Tones and I seem to be at war – but I can’t make sense of what’s going on. I’ll try to catch you up. The Dance Monkey singer made headlines this week after it was leaked she’d turned down an offer to perform at next weekend’s NRL grand final. The rugby league boss Peter V’landys said negotiations broke down due to “artistic differences”, and some claimed it was because the Aria award-winning artist didn’t want to play her biggest hit. Dolphins’ NRL title bid after just four years of existence makes waves in UK | Jack Snape

A small village in Lancashire will be glued to the TV on Friday with the expansion club – and their star English centre – one win from a grand final The Dolphins had spent the best part of four seasons winning over neutrals as the likeable if unserious entertainers of the NRL, with their fetching red jerseys and TikTok-friendly try celebration. “Phins Up”, as the children say. But when English centre Herbie Farnworth took to the air against the Roosters three weeks ago, the stakes rose with him. Chasing a kick from Dolphins bandmaster Isaiya Katoa, he soared above Roosters captain James Tedesco to change the club’s fate. By half-time the Phins had put on four tries, all coming down Farnworth’s left side, for a match-winning lead. Continue reading...

No more ‘Mark doing freaky things’ as Nawaqanitawase’s NRL farewell looms

No more ‘Mark doing freaky things’ as Nawaqanitawase’s NRL farewell looms

The much-loved winger has an ‘unbelievable’ Roosters highlights reel but will soon cross codes again for the next rugby union chapter in Japan Mark Nawaqanitawase, the prime producer of NRL highlights, will soon be lost to rugby league at the age of just 26. His performances have been described as “freaky” and “ridiculous”, but he is due to return to rugby union as early as Saturday night, unless the Roosters can overcome Cronulla in their semi-final. To say Nawaqanitawase is much loved at Moore Park undersells the widespread affection for him. Officials at the Roosters and Rugby Australia are neighbours in the offices next to Allianz Stadium, and neither has any ill-will towards the winger, despite both losing him as a player during a three-year period in which Nawaqanitawase has reached almost inconceivable cross-code heights. ‘Now we seem to be the villains’: How PNG Chiefs are building a squad that is the envy of other NRL clubs

‘Now we seem to be the villains’: How PNG Chiefs are building a squad that is the envy of other NRL clubs

The expansion club’s recruiting spree has been aided by generous tax breaks with the goal to assemble a competitive roster from day one As Brian To’o ran away to score a try and seal victory for the Panthers in Sunday’s qualification final against the Roosters, rugby league fans in Papua New Guinea had almost as much reason to celebrate as those from Penrith. The 28-year-old winger showed he was back to his best in a high-pressure clash between teams many predict will contest next month’s grand final. Within two years, however, expansion club PNG Chiefs – boasting To’o and an all-star backline – hope to be in the same position after a recruiting spree that has drawn envy from other clubs. Wigan dominate the present but NRL cash is key to Super League future

Wigan dominate the present but NRL cash is key to Super League future

The playoffs begin on Friday with Wigan topping the table, but the competition could be run by NRL from next season As winds of change threaten to sweep through Super League off the field, there is an eery feeling of consistency on it as the business end of the season arrives. The prospect of a partnership with the National Rugby League looms closer, with the Australian governing body prepared to give clubs around £35m over five years in return for administrative control of Super League. The deal stalled throughout the summer, but the Guardian has been told it is now on the verge of approval after a meeting on Friday, with almost all clubs in favour. The finer details are still to be worked out, but with enough clubs on side, the NRL will effectively take over running Super League from 2027 and attempt to drive forward the competition’s off-field prospects. And when it does get its feet under the table, it would be a major surprise if a familiar face is not sitting at the head of it. Continue reading...
