My mother’s phone calls became stranger, but I couldn’t visit. A rescue dog helped me reach her

My mother’s phone calls became stranger, but I couldn’t visit. A rescue dog helped me reach her

Conversation was difficult. But Sally, a dear old German shepherd, gave me a glimpse of my mother’s emotional state My mother had been wanting a dog for years. She lived in Perth, on the other side of the country to her children and grandchildren who were all grown up. She had retired too early, had few interests, and didn’t get out much. She imagined a sleek little whippet curled up at her feet as she watched television. She imagined a pretty collar and a knitted coat. My stepfather was less keen. He stalled the dog issue for more than a year while he built a high fence around the property. Then there was a solar-powered, sliding electronic gate that took another six months of fine tuning. I would ring him up and berate him. “Please, why can’t you just get on with it. She wants a dog. Just get her a dog.” What I didn’t know was that the forbidding fence he was building, the gate operated by keypad and code, wasn’t just to contain a dog. It was to contain my mother. On the arena where the men’s rugby World Cup will begin in just over one year, Australia are showing promise. They had led South Africa 42-17 midway through the second half. Now, the score is 42-31. Wallabies hold off world champion Springboks in chaotic Rugby Championship test

Australia beat South Africa 42-38 to send World Cup warning Les Kiss’s side reduced to 11 men in final 15 minutes A year out from the World Cup, Australia have sent a huge warning shot to the competition, upsetting the two-time trophy winners South Africa with an extraordinary 42-38 win in Perth. On a weekend when the AFL and NRL delivered fairytale comebacks, the Wallabies trumped both rival codes, hammering rugby’s No 1 team with a skilful display that ended in bizarre circumstances when the men in gold held on despite being reduced to 11 players at the end. Fittingly, the victory found the Wallabies harnessing the aerial powers of Australian Rules and the rambunctious power of rugby league to dominate rugby’s world champions with a brilliant, inventive and courageous five-try performance that kept alive new coach Les Kiss’s unbeaten record and breathed new hope into the hearts of Australian fans nationwide. With Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii on the wing and a bench packed with forwards, coach Les Kiss is hoping he has a formula to topple the Springboks The weight of the occasion is almost enough to tip the great red continent into the Indian Ocean. Powered by sun and wind, the uncrewed vehicle will collect data to help Australian scientists better understand how oceans absorb emissions A small uncrewed vessel has embarked on a lap around Antarctica and may not return for months. The seven-metre craft, which looks like a large kayak in hi-vis orange, is expected to travel about 22,000km through inhospitable waters, propelled by powerful westerly winds and energy from the sun. Mark Wood was a high-speed hero who put body and soul on the line for England | Taha Hashim

Mark Wood was a high-speed hero who put body and soul on the line for England | Taha Hashim

Fast bowler won the Ashes and two World Cups but those successes were punctuated by long spells out with injury To reach for the career stats on Cricinfo is no way to go about it. This is a full-on YouTube job: boil the kettle, load up those spells at Headingley, St Lucia and the rest, and take in the whippy, absurd, mesmerising sight of perhaps the fastest English bowler there has ever been. That’s probably the best way to remember Mark Wood’s career. Tuesday’s announcement of his international retirement was coming from the moment Wood hobbled out of the Ashes last December, the series opener his only appearance. That always felt like the last act, one he rushed back for after surgery on his left knee earlier that year, and the game moves on fast. England’s seam stocks look healthy across formats, with Jofra Archer there to ramp it up when required. It’s a sore point that Archer and Wood played just two Tests together: one without supporters during the 2020 Covid-bubble summer, the other Wood’s farewell at Perth. Continue reading...
